One prescription: Use Cortex Broussonetiae (Zijingpi), decocted with aged wine. Take it frequently when warm. It is specifically used to treat spasm associated with "Crane's Knee Wind" (a condition characterized by knee swelling and wasting).
Another prescription: For treating swelling on the dorsum of hands and feet after dysentery, rendering walking impossible. Use equal parts of Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Chuanwu), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao), and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Cangzhu). Soak them in wine, grind into powder, and make pills using wine paste as a binder. The guiding substance for administration is the same as above (i.e., taken with wine).
A verse states:
After dysentery, wind-cold pain arises in the legs;
The Five Accumulations Formula from Ju Fang can naturally overcome this.
Remove Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) from the formula,
Boil it in wine and take generously to see efficacy.
In the *Suwen: Re Lun* chapter, the Yellow Emperor asked: "Nowadays, febrile diseases are all of the category of Cold Damage (*Shanghan*). Some recover, some die; those who die do so within six or seven days, while those who recover do so after ten days or more. Why is this? I wish to understand the reason." Qibo replied: "The Great Yang (*Juyang*, i.e., Taiyang) belongs to all Yang meridians. Its vessels connect to the Fengfu point, thus it governs the Qi of all Yang meridians. When humans are injured by cold, they develop febrile disease. Even if the heat is severe, death will not occur; however, those suffering from 'Double Injury by Cold' (*Lianggan Yu Han*, where exterior and interior meridians are simultaneously affected) will inevitably die." The Yellow Emperor said: "I wish to hear about its manifestations." Qibo said: "On the first day of Cold Damage, the Great Yang meridian receives the pathogen, resulting in headache, stiff neck, and stiffness of the lower back and spine. On the second day, the Yangming meridian receives the pathogen. Yangming governs flesh; its vessels run along the nose and connect to the eyes, resulting in fever, eye pain, dry nose, and inability to sleep. On the third day, the Shaoyang meridian receives the pathogen. Shaoyang governs the Gallbladder; its vessels follow the costal region and connect to the ears, resulting in hypochondriac pain and deafness. If the pathogens of the three Yang meridians have been received but have not entered the Zang organs, they can be cured by sweating. On the fourth day, the Taiyin meridian receives the pathogen. Taiyin vessels distribute in the stomach and connect to the throat, resulting in abdominal fullness and dry throat. On the fifth day, the Shaoyin meridian receives the pathogen. Shaoyin vessels pass through the Kidney, connect to the Lung, and attach to the root of the tongue, resulting in dry mouth, dry tongue, and thirst. On the sixth day, the Jueyin meridian receives the pathogen. Jueyin vessels circulate around the genitalia and connect to the Liver, resulting in lower abdominal fullness, retraction of the scrotum, and cold limbs. If the three Yin and three Yang meridians, and the five Zang and six Fu organs are all diseased, and the Ying and Wei Qi fail to circulate, and the five Zang organs become blocked, death will ensue. In cases not involving Double Injury by Cold, on the seventh day, the disease of the Great Yang declines, and headache lessens slightly; on the eighth day, the disease of Yangming declines, and body heat lessens slightly; on the ninth day, the disease of Shaoyang declines, and hearing improves slightly; on the tenth day, the disease of Taiyin declines, abdominal distension subsides returning to normal, and appetite returns; on the eleventh day, the disease of Shaoyin declines, thirst stops, abdominal fullness ceases, tongue dryness resolves, and sneezing occurs; on the twelfth day, the disease of Jueyin declines, the scrotum relaxes, lower abdominal fullness slightly decreases, the major pathogenic factors are expelled, and the illness heals day by day." The Yellow Emperor asked: "How should it be treated?" Qibo replied: "Treatment involves unblocking the meridians of each respective organ, so that the disease declines day by day. If the duration is less than three days, it can be cured by sweating; if the duration exceeds three days, it can be cured by purging."
The Yellow Emperor asked: "When febrile disease has healed, why does residual heat sometimes remain?" Qibo replied: "All cases of residual heat occur because food was forced upon the patient while the heat was still intense, hence it is called 'residual' (*Yi*). In such cases, the pathogenic factor has declined but heat remains hidden. Because the Qi of grain interacts with the residual heat, the two heats combine, causing residual symptoms." The Yellow Emperor said: "Excellent. How should residual heat be treated?" Qibo replied: "Observe deficiency and excess, regulate reversal and順 (normalcy), and the disease will certainly heal." The Yellow Emperor asked: "What should be prohibited during febrile disease?" Qibo replied: "When the febrile disease has slightly improved, eating meat will cause recurrence, and overeating will cause residual heat. These are the prohibitions." (Note: There are also cases where excessive labor after recovery leads to recurrent fever, which is also termed 'residual'.)
Any disease originating from Cold Damage that transforms into Warm Disease (*Wen*) occurring before the Summer Solstice is classified as Warm Disease; occurring after the Summer Solstice is classified as Summerheat (*Shu*). Summerheat should be expelled together with sweat; do not stop the sweating. (It must be understood that Summerheat-Heat diseases require the use of Acrid-Cool methods, and profuse sweating is contraindicated.)
