(Meng Chang) was benevolent and filial, fond of medical prescriptions. When his mother fell ill, successive imperial physicians failed to cure her; he prepared a decoction himself, which resulted in her recovery. When ministers were ill, he personally summoned them for diagnosis, astonishing the medical officials. When Emperor Taizu of Song campaigned against Shu, Meng Chang, unwilling to let the people suffer slaughter, fled to Bianjing and surrendered at the palace gates; Emperor Taizu bestowed upon him generous titles.
The people of Shu were proficient in medicine, not bound by official formularies, and meticulously examined medicinal materials. Their annotations on the *Bencao* (Materia Medica) were highly effective, allowing them to deeply understand drug properties; their applications often yielded miraculous results.
Courtesy name Qinzhong, from Fuzhong, Ziyang. He was well-versed in the Five Classics and various philosophical schools, possessing extensive knowledge. Though originally a commoner, he later held the positions of Pushe and Zhongsan Dafu, and was devoted to medical prescriptions.
A native of Gaoping, he served as Taiyi Ling (Director of the Imperial Medical Bureau). He was erudite in classical prescriptions, particularly skilled in pulse diagnosis, thoroughly understood the principles of health preservation, and comprehended the mechanisms of disease treatment. He collected and synthesized various theories, compiling the *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) into ten volumes. He also edited Zhang Zhongjing’s prescription discussions into thirty-six volumes. Regrettably, the *Mai Jing* erroneously paired the pulses of the Small Intestine and Large Intestine with those of the Heart and Lungs, leading to the forgery known as Gao Yangsheng’s *Mai Jue* (Pulse Rhymes), which stole its reputation. This error misled the common people of the world.
His place of origin is unknown. In his youth, he was adept at medical prescriptions, and his contemporaries praised his skills as divine. At that time, Xu Yong served as the Inspector of Yuzhou. His younger brother had suffered from heart and abdominal pain for over ten years, nearly dying. One night, a spirit behind a screen spoke to the "stomach spirit," saying, "Tomorrow Li Ziyu will pass by here and kill you with a red pill; you will die." The stomach spirit replied, "I am not afraid of it." People were sent to wait for Li Ziyu, who indeed arrived. Before entering the gate, the patient heard groaning sounds from within his abdomen. When Li Ziyu entered to examine him, he diagnosed it as a ghost illness. He then administered the Badu Chiwan (Eight-Toxic Red Pill); shortly after, rumbling noises occurred in the abdomen, followed by several bouts of diarrhea, after which the patient recovered. This is the source of the current Badu Wan formula. It originates from *Soushen Ji* (Records of Searching the Supernatural).
Courtesy name Shi'an, from Zhaoren, Anding, styled Xuanyan Xiansheng. He was calm, pure, desirous of little, and possessed noble aspirations, dedicating himself to writing. After contracting Fengbi (Wind-Bi syndrome), he began studying medicine. He extensively read classical prescriptions, never letting go of his books, until he mastered their subtleties. His works, the *Jia Yi Jing* (Classic of Jin-Yi) and the *Zhen Jing* (Needle Classic), are circulated in the world.
