[Chart of Monthly Branches]
The verse states:
For years of Jia and Ji, the first month builds Bing; for the remaining years, one must deliberate carefully.
For years of Yi and Geng, start from Wu; where to seek for Xin and Bing?
For years of Wu and Gui, build Jia first; for Ding and Ren, build Ren again.
In years of Jia and Ji, the first month builds Bing; since Bing Fire generates Jia and Ji Earth, applying this logic to the rest, the principles of establishing the Five Movements (Wu Yun) all align.
The annual stem virtue symbols are also derived using this example.
The Five Tones (Wu Yin) are the sounds corresponding to the Five Elements (Wu Xing). Earth corresponds to Gong tone, located in years of Jia and Ji. Gong belongs to Earth, representing the Way of Harmony and Balance, flowing smoothly everywhere. Just as it encompasses halls, chambers, inner corners, and steps under the term "Gong," its scope is not uniform; generally, Earth penetrates Metal, Wood, Water, and Fire, governs the four seasons, and nourishes the four Zang organs, reflecting this comprehensive nature. Therefore, the Five Movements begin with the Heavenly Stem Jia, which belongs to Earth. Earth generates Metal, so Yi follows next; Metal generates Water, so Water follows next (Note: The text implies a specific sequence or context here, translating literally as per source). Thus, the Five Elements generate each other in a cycle, Jia being Yang, Yi being Yin, counting alternately like a ring without end. In Yang years, it is called "Tai" (Great/Excess); in Yin years, it is called "Shao" (Less/Deficiency). If a Yang year's excess is suppressed by the Si Tian (Heavenly Qi), or if a Yin year's deficiency is combined with the Annual Branch, both are termed "Ping Qi" (Balanced Qi). Metal corresponds to Shang tone, located in years of Yi and Geng. Shang means strong, referring to the firmness of Metal's nature. Water corresponds to Yu tone, located in years of Bing and Xin. Yu means舒展 (stretching/expanding), indicating that Yang Qi is about to return, and all things are nurtured and grow expansively. Wood corresponds to Jue tone, located in years of Ding and Ren. Jue means touch/stimulate, symbolizing the stimulation and birth of various Yang Qis. Fire corresponds to Zhi tone, located in years of Wu and Gui. Zhi means stop, stating that when things reach fullness, they stop. Attached chart:
[Chart of Five Tones Establishing Movements]
Verse on Five Tones Establishing Movements:
Yu is Water tone, Zhi is Fire tone, Gong is Earth tone, Jue is Wood tone, and Shang is Metal tone.
The Heavenly Stems establish the Yin-Yang positions of the Movements; Tai denotes Yang, Shao denotes Yin.
Among the Ten Heavenly Stems, there are five Yin and five Yang. The Five Movements are established, with Excess (Tai Guo) and Deficiency (Bu Ji) influencing each other. In years of deficiency, the element that controls me comes to overcome me, because the Movement itself is weak. In such cases, there naturally occur Sui Hui (Year Meeting) and Tong Sui Hui (Same Year Meeting), which also represent Balanced Qi, additionally supported by the combination of the Year Branch. When the date of Qi transition occurs, and the Hourly Stem combines, it receives assistance, termed "Ping Qi" (Balanced Qi), thereby achieving the balance of Annual Qi. The growth and pulse responses of all things must conform to the timing, without being early or late.
The Sages established names to record these. For example, in the Xin Hai year, the Water Movement should be Balanced Qi. Why? Because Xin represents the Water Movement, and in a Yin year encountering Hai, which belongs to Northern Water, mutual support makes the Water Qi balanced. Similarly, in the Gui Si year, the Fire Movement is also called Balanced Qi. Why? Because Gui represents the Fire Movement, and in a Yin year encountering Si, which belongs to Southern Fire, mutual support makes the Fire Qi balanced. Furthermore, the transition to the First Qi occurs on the day of Great Cold before the new year. For instance, in the Ding Hai year, on the day of the Si Tian transition coinciding with the new moon, combining with Ren, it is named "Gan De Fu" (Stem Virtue Symbol). Fu means combination, thus becoming Balanced Qi. If the transition time encounters Ren, it is also called Gan De Fu. Apart from this, encounters after the time of the First Qi transition do not mutually assist; the rest follow this pattern.
What is meant by combination is: Jia combines with Ji, Yi with Geng, Bing with Xin, Ding with Ren, Wu with Gui. Also, in Yin years, if the Monthly Stem is encountered, they all combine and assist; if no controlling (Sheng) Qi is encountered but a combining Stem is seen, it is also considered Balanced Qi; if after the controlling Qi passes and the repelling (Fu) Qi completes, and a Monthly Stem combination is met, it attains the correct position. Therefore, years of Balanced Qi cannot be pre-recorded. The listing of the Ten Heavenly Stems below by Yin and Yang years is merely a general overview, set up for ease of understanding.
To record Balanced Qi, one must calculate based on the current year's Branch, Day, and Hour according to the method. Thus, the Tai Jue year is called Fa Sheng (Excess), the Shao Jue year is called Wei He (Deficiency), and the Zheng Jue year is called Fu He (Balanced Qi). The Tai Zhi year is called He Xi (Excess), the Shao Zhi year is called Fu Ming (Deficiency), and the Zheng Zhi year is called Sheng Ming (Balanced Qi). The Tai Gong year is called Dun Fu (Excess), the Shao Gong year is called Bei Jian (Deficiency), and the Zheng Gong year is called Bei Hua (Balanced Qi). The Tai Shang year is called Jian Cheng (Excess), the Shao Shang year is called Cong Ge (Deficiency), and the Zheng Shang year is called Shen Ping (Balanced Qi). The Tai Yu year is called Liu Yan (Excess), the Shao Yu year is called He Liu (Deficiency), and the Zheng Yu year is called Jing Shun (Balanced Qi). Each is recorded accordingly. When Qi is balanced, it is the same as Zheng Hua (Orthodox Transformation), having neither excess nor deficiency. Furthermore, detailed analysis shows that among Excess Movements, those suppressed by Si Tian Qi also become Balanced Qi. Thus, in the He Xi record, during the two years of Cold Water Si Tian (Wu Chen, Wu Xu), and in the Jian Cheng Qi, during the four years of Fire Si Tian (Geng Zi, Geng Wu, Geng Yin, Geng Shen), these are all years of Balanced Qi.
