Treats excess fire in the Liver channel, presenting with constipation, dysuria (difficult and scanty urination), or pain in the chest and diaphragm, and swelling of the scrotum. For all conditions belonging to excess fire in the Liver channel, this formula is suitable.
Herbs: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhiziren (Gardeniae Semen) (each 1 liang); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Lvhui (Aloe), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) (each 5 qian); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (2 qian).
Grind the above herbs into powder, use fried Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) paste as a binder to make pills. Take 20 pills each time, administered with Ginger Decoction (Jiang Tang).
Ke Yunbo stated: The Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) of the Liver is suited for purging rather than tonifying. Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) inherits the color of the East and enters/connects with the Liver; due to its great cold nature, it is able to purge excess fire.
Treats conditions where Yang is excessive and Yin is deficient, with heat in the blood causing reckless bleeding, manifesting as vomiting or epistaxis (nosebleed).
Herbs: Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Sheng Baiye (Plagiopodi Folium), Sheng Heye (Nelumbinis Folium), Sheng Aye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) (equal parts).
Pound the above four herbs until mashed, form into pills the size of a chicken egg. Take one pill each time, dissolve in boiling water and drink.
Ke Yunbo stated: When Heart and Kidney do not interact (Heart-Kidney Non-interaction), all five Zang organs are damaged; when Yin is deficient, Yang has no attachment, causing fire to flare up to the Upper Jiao; when Yang is excessive, the Yang collaterals are injured, thus blood flows upward.
Treats conditions where the Shen Shui (aqueous humor) widens and gradually disperses, vision is dim like fog or dew, black spots appear in the visual field, diplopia (double vision) occurs, and the Shen Shui appears pale green or pale white.
Herbs: Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix) (roasted), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 2 liang); Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 1 liang); Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Caojueming (Badicae Fructus) (8 qian).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, use refined honey to make pills the size of Torreya seeds. Take 30-50 pills each time, administered with warm wine or salt water.
Luo Dongyi stated: This formula is designed for cases of Yang deficiency and Yin weakness, where essence cannot be generated to nourish the eyes. Therefore, in ophthalmology, it is valued equally with Ci Zhu Wan (Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill) from *Qianjin Fang*, treating similar syndromes.
A harsh formula for treating stubborn phlegm caused by excess heat; not suitable for those with deficiency-cold constitutions.
Herbs: Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (steamed with wine, each 8 liang); Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) (5 qian, avoid fire processing); Mengshi (Calcar Silicis) (1 liang, calcined with Yan Xiao (Natrii Nitratis), aged material is better, newly processed is inferior).
Grind the above four herbs into fine powder, make water-honey pills the size of Sichuan pepper grains, adjusting the dose according to the patient's size. Send down with a mouthful of warm water, then lie supine immediately to allow the medicine to descend slowly.
Ke Yunbo stated: The saying "The Spleen is the source of phlegm production, the Lung is the vessel storing phlegm" is baseless. The Spleen transports fluids for the Stomach to irrigate the four peripheries. One must understand that the Kidney governs water; if Kidney Qi does not flow, fluid metabolism becomes abnormal, forming tangible substances. Mineral stones (referring to Mengshi) have turbid odors but are not cloying/stagnant, preventing retention in the body; this is how the name "Gun Tan Wan" (Rolling Phlegm Pill) originated. Furthermore, fearing that the gate (Kidney gate) remains closed and old phlegm persists, heavy-settling agents are selected to guide internal Qi back to the Kidney and unblock stagnation in the intestines and stomach. When Kidney Qi flows freely, water turbidity and waste are not retained, and the medicine does not adhere to the intestines; Dahuang and Huangqin do not damage the Stomach Qi. Thus, three benefits are achieved in one move, which is why its efficacy is miraculous.
