In the spring of Renyin year, the wife of Shao Xiaochi suffered from delayed menstruation (Menstrual Delay). The physician diagnosed it as pregnancy and prescribed a large amount of fetal preservation medicine. Gradually, abdominal distension and edema of the dorsum of the foot developed, with rebellious Qi preventing lying down and loss of appetite. In summer, Wang Mengying was consulted. He said: "This is Blood deficiency with Qi stagnation, caused by mistaken tonification leading to distension." First, he prescribed Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Magnolia Bark (Houpo), Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Chicken Gizzard Lining (Jineijin), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Areca Pericarpium (Dafupi), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Poria (Fuling), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Prunus Spinosa Seed (Lianshi), Apricot Kernel (Xingren), Aster Tataricus Root (Ziwan), and Inula Flower (Xuanfu), with a slight addition of Ginseng Radix (Renshen) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu). After administration, the Qi mechanism rotated, distension resolved, and appetite stabilized. Gradually, treatment shifted to nourishing Yin and Blood. After several months, menstruation resumed and she recovered.
The wife of Zhang Yangzhi had normal diet but emaciated skin. Her menstruation was on time but the flow was purple, pale, and irregular. Her calves were hot while other parts of the body remained warm. Her complexion was greenish-yellow with a faint black hue, resembling deficiency-cold syndrome. Multiple medicines failed. Finally, Wang Mengying was consulted. The pulse seemed deficient and fine, but at the deep level, it was slightly wiry and slippery. He said: "This is excess in Yangming and insufficiency in Shaoyin, resulting in dry Earth and depleted Water." Zhang Zhongjing's method of urgent purgation to preserve Yin applies to external contraction. For excess pathogens, direct draining is suitable; however, this is an internal injury. For formless heat, sweet and cold methods are appropriate. Although the principle is similar, the herbs differ. He prescribed American Ginseng (Xiyangshen), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), White Peony Root (Shengbaishao), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shengshigao), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Poria (Fuling), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), Prunus Spinosa Seed (Lianshi), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maigendong), and Akebia Caulis (Mutong). After consuming several jin, the black hue receded, muscles filled out, calf heat disappeared, and menstruation regulated.
The niece of Zhang Yangzhi suffered from menstrual delay and gradually decreasing appetite. Someone administered blood-invigorating and menstruation-promoting drugs, which made her more averse to grain. Wang Mengying was consulted. The pulse was slow and slippery. He said: "This is phlegm-Qi stagnation blocking the meridians. The cause is sedentary lifestyle without labor. The treatment should focus on resolving phlegm and moving Qi. Do not use blood-activating herbs; menstruation will flow naturally." Yu laughed and said: "This person never expectorates phlegm. Treating Qi for a blood disorder will immediately lead to distension." Upon taking Wang's prescription, she indeed began to expectorate phlegm, and the disease cured. Zhang Yangzhi was deeply convinced. I believe that people treat the head for headache and feet for foot pain; if they occasionally cure, they claim credit, but if wrong medicines cause death, where is the grievance redressed? This is why *Yuyi Cao* lists the instruction on discussing diseases first. Wang Mengying derived great benefit from Yu Jiayan (Yu Shi), so his discussion of diseases far exceeds ordinary levels. How can one know that superior insight comes from reading? Although, as the saying goes, when capable men are present, good governance follows, this is not easy to achieve.
The elder sister of Wu Fuzhai had always been constitutionally weak. In her childhood, Fengshan diagnosed her and predicted she would be infertile. In the Guisi year, she lost both parents and became depressed. Menstruation gradually delayed, sleep and appetite ceased, muscles emaciated, and acid regurgitation occurred, presenting a dire situation. Wang Mengying treated her with Korean Ginseng (Gaolishen), Coptis Rhizome stir-fried with salt water, Licorice Root (Gancao), Wheat (Xiaomai), Jujube (Hongzao), Lily Bulb (Baihe), Poria (Fuling), White Peony Root (Baishao), Inula Flower (Xuanfuhua), Safflower Stamen (Xinjjiang), and Oyster Shell (Muli). Various symptoms gradually subsided. Subsequently, he used Korean Ginseng, Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), and Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang) to nourish Yin. She recovered strength surpassing her previous state.
The younger sister of Zhao Tingqiao suffered from abdominal distension and vomiting upon menstruation, along with soreness and pain in the waist and spine, swelling and pain in both legs, tendon spasms and epigastric pain, and even convulsions and syncope. Multiple medicines failed. Wang Mengying prescribed Jinlingzi San combined with Zuojin Wan, added with Erchen Tang (Tangerine Peel, Pinellia Tuber), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), and Poria (Fuling). After a few doses, she recovered. Continuously using Cistanche Stem (Rongshen), Dodder Seed (Tusizi), Epimedium Herb (Yinyanghuo), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong), Mulberry Fruit (Sangshen), Quince (Mugua), Dipsacus Root (Xuduan), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), White Peony Root (Baishao), Fennel Fruit (Huixiang), and Prunus Spinosa Seed (Lianshi) for regulation, menstruation arrived on time without pain. In early winter, she met Yang Zipu and soon conceived.
Chu Qinxiang, a female scholar, suffered from menstrual delay accompanied by alternating chills and fever. Physicians considered it a consumptive disease and administered warming and tonifying drugs. This gradually led to abdominal distension, loss of appetite, leukorrhea, constipation, and painful, difficult urination. Wang Mengying palpated the pulse, which was wiry, forceful, and rapid. It was heat lurking in the Jueyin channel, and mistaken treatment caused lung congestion. He gave formulas to clear and descend Lung Qi, and she took Danggui Longhui Wan. After two doses, chills and fever ceased, and hunger returned. Ten days later, all symptoms resolved.
