Discourse states: Vomiting and hiccups caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage) are diseases located in the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The meridian of the Foot-Yangming ascends from below; when it reverses upward, it causes Qi rebellion in the person. Due to Qi rebellion, vomiting and hiccups occur. Zhang Zhongjing stated, "If there is frequent vomiting, even if there are Yangming syndrome manifestations, one must be cautious and absolutely not use purgation," which is precisely for this reason. Furthermore, vomiting and hiccups in Shanghan may arise because heat pathogens are knotted in the chest, causing high-positioned pathogenic factors; or they may result from deficiency-heat remaining internally after emesis or purgation treatments, as well as from stagnant water accumulation. Since the syndromes differ, the treatments vary accordingly, and careful differentiation is essential.
