Discourse states: The spleen and stomach inherently possess damp-heat, or it arises from excessive drinking and overeating during the great heat of summer. Excessive sexual activity draws heat pathogens into the Kidney. Dampness and heat attack each other, leading to difficult urination. The lower abdomen becomes hard and distended; damp-toxins flow and scatter within the muscles, causing yellowing of the limbs, body, and face. Hence, it is called Nulao Dan (Jaundice caused by sexual exhaustion). However, its manifestations may also include blackening of the forehead, slight sweating, heat in the palms and soles, onset at dusk, urgency of the Bladder, and free urination. Treatment should be tailored to each specific syndrome.
For treating Nulao Dan with vexatious heat in the hands and feet, pain in the joints, spasm and urgency in the lower abdomen, and occasional deficiency sweating, use Biejia Tang (Turtle Shell Decoction):
Biejia (Pellicula Testudinis, removed skirt, vinegar-fried, 1.5 liang); Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, removed radicle); Yinchenhao (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae); Digupi (Cortex Lycii); Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra); Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae).
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of three qianbi (approx. 3-4 grams). Add one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, remove the dregs, and take warm without restriction on time.
For treating Nulao Dan, use Kushen Wan (Sophora Pill):
Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, 3 liang); Longdan (Radix Gentianae, 2.5 liang); Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae, 3.5 liang).
The above three herbs are crushed, sieved into powder, and mixed with ox bile to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take twenty pills per dose with warm water, twice daily and once at night, gradually increasing to forty pills.
For treating Nulao Dan with yellowing of the body and eyes, fever and aversion to cold, fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen, and difficult urination, which results from severe fatigue, intense heat, and injury from sexual intercourse, use Huashi San (Talcum Powder):
Xishi (Natrii Sulfas); Fanshi (Alumen, roasted until juice is dry, 1 liang each).
The above two ingredients are mixed and ground into a powder. Take one qianbi (approx. 1-1.5 grams) per dose, mixed with thin porridge drink made from barley. Cover with blankets to induce sweating. If the pathogen exits via urine, the color will be yellow; if via stool, the color will be black.
For treating Nulao Dan and labor-induced qi heat with thirst, sweating on the forehead, heat in both hands and feet, and obstructed urination, use Xijiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction):
Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved); Longdan (Radix Gentianae, 1 liang each); Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 0.5 liang each); Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed, baked, 3 fen).
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take three qianbi per dose. Add one zhan of water and one date-sized piece of fresh ginger (shattered). Decoct together until reduced to seven-tenths. Remove dregs, add one he of fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice, and take warm after meals.
For treating Huangdan Bing (Jaundice Disease) with fever and aversion to cold starting at Shen hour (3-5 PM), fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen, yellow body and black forehead, black loose stools, and heat under the feet, which constitutes Nulao Dan. If abdominal fullness is present, it is difficult to treat. Use Ershi San (Two Stones Powder):
Huashi (Talcum); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 1 liang each).
The above two ingredients are ground extremely fine. Take one qianbi per dose, mixed with thin porridge drink made from barley, three times daily. Recovery occurs when urination becomes smooth.
For treating Nulao Dan with yellowing of the body and eyes, aversion to cold and fever, fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen, and difficult urination, use Huashi San (Talcum Powder):
Huashi (Talcum, 1.5 liang); Fanshi (Alumen, roasted until juice is exhausted, 1 liang).
The above two ingredients are ground and sieved into a powder. Take two qianbi per dose, mixed with barley porridge drink, without restriction on time. Continue until yellow fluid is excreted.
Another prescription:
Luafa (Human Hair Tangle, size of a chicken egg); Zhuzhi (Porcine Fat, 0.5 jin).
The above two ingredients are placed in a pan and fried over low heat until the hair is completely dissolved. Take one spoonful mixed with warm water without restriction on time. Continue until urination becomes smooth.
For treating Nulao Dan with blackening of the forehead and sweating, heat in the hands and feet, vexatious pain in the limbs, fever at dusk, and free urination, use Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction):
Longdan (Radix Gentianae, removed radicle); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried and cut); Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed, baked); Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, removed radicle); Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae); Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved, 3 fen each); Mumian (Concha Ostreae, 1 liang).
The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take three qianbi per dose. Add one zhan of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths. Remove dregs, add half a he of fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice, boil for one or two more boils. Take warm without restriction on time.
For treating Nulao Dan with sweating on the forehead, vexatious sensation in the limbs, fever at Shen hour, and free urination, use Muli Tang (Oyster Shell Decoction):
Muli (Concha Ostreae, calcined until red-hot); Longdan (Radix Gentianae); Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae); Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed, baked); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 3 fen each); Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved, 0.5 liang); Bencao (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong); Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, 3 fen each).
The above eight herbs are crushed and sifted into a powder. Take four qianbi per dose. Add one large zhan of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths. Remove dregs and take hot. After taking, cover warmly to avoid wind and cold.
