Commentary states: Various types of jaundice, including wine jaundice (Jiu Dan) and labor-induced jaundice from sexual excess (Nü Lao Dan), if left untreated for a long time, will all transform into black jaundice (Hei Dan). The manifestations include fullness in the lower abdomen, yellowing of the entire body, yet the forehead appears dark/black, heat under the soles of the feet, and black stools.
Jaundice originates as a disease of the Spleen. The Spleen corresponds to Earth in the Five Phases. If Spleen disease persists, it transmits to the organ it overcomes, which is the Kidney. Thus, the Kidney becomes affected. The Kidney is the Water organ; its meridian is the Foot-Shaoyin (Lesser Yin of the Foot), and its associated color is Black. Since the pathology resides in the Kidney, symptoms such as lower abdominal fullness, dark complexion, black stools, and heat under the soles occur. These are all signs of disease affecting the Foot-Shaoyin meridian.
Dang Gui Tang (Angelica Decoction) for treating various jaundices that have persisted for a long time and transformed into black jaundice:
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 liang), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, removed coarse bark, 6 liang), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, core removed, 1.5 liang), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, crushed and stir-fried, 1 liang), Yinchenshao (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, crushed), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae).
The above fourteen ingredients are crushed like hemp seeds. For each dose, take three qianbi (approx. 9-10g), add one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, insert two cracked large dates (Zao Ren), decoct until seven-tenths remains, remove dregs, and take warm. Three times daily. Another version excludes Huangqin.

Tugua Gen (Radix Trichosanthis Kirilowii).
The above single ingredient. Take half a zhan on an empty stomach daily. The disease will resolve as it exits via urination. However, dosage must be adjusted according to the patient's constitution. Robust patients may take half a zhan; frail patients should take one he (approx. 20ml). If fresh root is unavailable, crush one liang of dried root, add one and a half zhan of water, decoct until seven-tenths remains, remove dregs, and take in one dose. Frail patients should reduce the dose accordingly.
Gua Di San (Melon Seed Powder) for treating black jaundice with darkening of the body and stools, and persistent jaundice:
Gua Di (Fructus Momordicae), Xionghuang (Realgar, boiled in vinegar and ground, 1 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted and crushed, 1 liang), Nüwei (Caulis Polygoni Multiflori, 2 liang).
The above four ingredients are pounded and sifted into a fine powder. Each dose takes one zi bi (approx. 1-2g). Use twenty grains of Chi Xiaodou (Seed Vigna Angularis) and one fen of Fuling (Poria) with one zhan of water, decoct until six-tenths remains. Remove dregs and mix with the powder. Vomiting should occur shortly after administration; once vomiting stops, the illness resolves.

The above twelve ingredients are pounded into powder, mixed with refined honey, and pounded 300-500 times. Form pills the size of mung beans. Each dose takes ten pills on an empty stomach with rice water, three times daily.
