Discussions state: The disease of toxic swelling (Du Zhong) involves wind-toxin (Feng Du) condensing within the skin and muscles. In some cases, it originates from areas of deficiency and softness in the body. If the pathogenic qi cannot be expelled and invades the abdomen, it may lead to death.
For the initial stage of toxic swelling where pus and blood have not yet ulcerated, accompanied by fever and pain, Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Fragrant and Forsythia Decoction) is suitable for initial administration.
Ingredients include: Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, with rhizome removed), Sangjisheng (Taxilli Herba), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xunluxiang (Olibanum), Shexiang (Moschus, ground, each 2 liang), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried, 3 liang).
Of the twelve ingredients above, ten are cut into sizes resembling hemp seeds or beans, and the two ground ingredients are mixed evenly. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi (a traditional measuring spoon), boiled in 1.5 zhan of water until reduced to 1 zhan. Add 3 fen of Zhuli (Bambusa Textilis Var.
