Discourse states: Blood and Qi flow freely when warmed, but coagulate and stagnate when exposed to cold. The Liver stores blood, and its essence ascends to nourish the eyes. If the Liver Meridian is deficient and cold, symptoms such as dim vision and excessive tearing will occur. Ancient prescriptions employ the method of warm compresses (Wen Yun Fa), aiming to disperse Blood and Qi so that they may flow freely. For stubborn and thick nebulae (Yi Mo) that cannot be removed by warm compresses, cauterization (Lao Fa) is appropriate.
Methods of Warm Compress and Cauterization
Prescription for applying and warming with Rehmannia Paste to treat redness and swelling of the eyes:
Raw Rehmania Root (Sheng Di Huang); Sour Millet Rice Starch (Su Mi Fan Dian).
Take equal parts of the above two ingredients, grind them thoroughly into a paste, spread evenly on thin silk cloth, approximately two cun square, apply and warm over the eyes, replacing when dry.
Mache Warm Compress Prescription for treating tearing or purulent discharge from the eyes:
Seeds of Purslane (Ma Chi Zi); Seeds of Amaranthus Manihot (Ren Xian Zi).
Take equal parts of the above two ingredients, pound and sieve into powder, place in a copper vessel, steam over rice until cooked, wrap in cotton cloth, and apply warm compress to the outer canthus (Da Tou). Where pus drains, continue warm compressing while hot to penetrate the eyeball (Tou Jing). Apply 30-50 times per session; the purulent discharge will cease naturally.
Burning Needle Cauterization Method for treating blindness after febrile disease or extremely thick white nebulae:
Obtain a flat-headed needle sized to fit the nebula, heat it until red-hot, and cauterize directly at the center of the nebula. Handle lightly. If the nebula breaks after cauterization, apply a small amount of medicine to remove nebulae (Chu Yi Yao).
Middle Finger Warm Compress Method for treating dim vision:
Sit facing east, regulate breathing until calm. Use the middle fingers of both hands, moistened with saliva seven times, rub together and then wipe/warm the eyes. This is effective.
Palm Warm Compress Method for treating dim vision:
At cockcrow, rub both hands together until very hot, warm compress the eyes three times, then pinch the inner and outer canthi with fingernails. Sensation of divine light appearing is excellent.
Vessel Hot Water Warm Compress Prescription for treating red, itchy, gritty eyes, and all eye diseases:
Fill a vessel with hot water; a copper vessel is best. Use to warm compress the eyes. Keep eyes closed, do not open, and do not rub with hands. Then, scoop the hot water from the vessel to rinse the eyes. Stop when the water becomes slightly cool. Perform this 3-4 times daily. Those without eye diseases may also use this method occasionally.
Methods for Treating Reverse and順 Nebulae:
When the Five Zang Organs are deficient and exhausted, Wind-Heat rushes upward to the Liver. If the nebula grows from top to bottom, it is called Reverse Nebula (Ni Yi). If it grows from bottom to top, it is called Smooth Nebula (Shun Yi). These conditions are suitable for treatment with warm compress and cauterization methods.
