It is said that the meridians of all Yang channels converge on the head. When wind-heat pathogenic factors invade, Yang pathogens become excessive and erupt between the scalp and brain collaterals, presenting as numerous small sores with a red color and exudate, accompanied by itching, pain, and spreading infiltration, eventually leading to hair loss. Hence, it is named "Chi Tu" (Red Baldness).

The *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine) states that the Liver governs the eyes, saying that among the Zang organs it corresponds to the Liver, and among the orifices it opens into the Eyes. The *Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states that Liver Qi connects to the Eyes. When the Eyes are harmonious, one can distinguish the five colors. The *Neijing* also states that the Heart is the concentration of the essence of the five Zang organs, and the Eyes are its orifice. Since the Eyes are the orifice of both the Liver and the Heart, why is this? The answer is: The Eyes are the gathering place of the essence of the five Zang organs and are not exclusively governed by the Liver. Specifically, the essence of Bone manifests as the pupil (Tong Ren), the essence of Sinew manifests as the iris (Hei Jing), the essence of Blood manifests as the blood vessels (Luo), the essence of Qi manifests as the sclera (Bai Jing), and the essence of Flesh manifests as the eyelids (Yue Shu). Analytically speaking, the Eyes connect with all five Zang organs; synthetically speaking, they are primarily governed by the Liver. Because they connect with the five Zang organs, it is said that clarity of vision and discrimination of five colors represent the brilliance of Qi and Blood at this location. By observing the excess and deficiency of the five Zang organs, the strength and weakness of the six Fu organs, and the flourishing and declining state of the body, through mutual verification, one can determine the division between life and death. Because they are primarily governed by the Liver, when Liver deficiency and cold occur, vision becomes blurred with visual hallucinations (seeing flowers); when Liver excess and heat occur, eye pain feels like needle pricking; when Cold resides in the Liver, vision is dim and the pupil hurts; when Liver Heat rushes upward to the eyes, the eyes become red and painful; polyps may grow, and other conditions arise. Furthermore, if the Spirit and Will are sorrowful and tears flow, it is due to the interaction between Water and Fire. Blindness resulting from one Water failing to overcome five Fires is due to the simultaneous accumulation of Yin and Yang. The changes of Yin and Yang in the five Zang organs all affect the Eyes. How much more so when improper nourishment, excessive activity, and disease generation occur? Such as consuming too many hot-natured foods, craving the five pungent spices, irregular emotions of anger and joy, immoderate sexual activity, exposure to cold or summer heat, dwelling in dampness or facing the wind, weeping, insomnia, and any overuse of visual effort—all can lead to disease. The manifestations vary, and those who practice health preservation must know these principles.
