To treat carbuncles and sores on the back (Yong Ju Fa Bei), breast abscesses in women (Ru Yong), and various boils that have not yet ulcerated, this formula promotes rapid resolution if they can be resolved; if they cannot be resolved, it facilitates rapid ulceration and hastens healing.
Muzhansi (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Baijiang (Patriniae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) — each one tael.
The above eleven ingredients are processed and sifted. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine. After swallowing, one feels the medicinal power flowing into the sore. If moxibustion fails to induce necrosis in carbuncles or sores, this formula may be taken.
If the lesion has not yet necrosed, remove Baijiang. If pus has already formed, add Baijiang. Administration: seven or eight times during the day, two or three times at night; more is better. If the disease is located in the lower body and pus and blood discharge, this indicates intestinal abscess (Chang Yong). If the pain is internal, taking this formula will relieve the pain. Long-term use treats various sores, carbuncles, and hemorrhoids; for those already ulcerated, it promotes early healing. However, physicians are unaware of using this medicine. For back carbuncles (Fa Bei), which lack specific treatments, if one initially feels discomfort on the back accompanied by thirst, take it frequently. When the medicinal effect takes hold, thirst ceases, and the swelling dissipates spontaneously. Even if already necrotic, continuous day and night administration causes swelling to dissipate unnoticed. For long-term use, remove Baijiang. For breast abscesses in women, this formula should be taken promptly. Another version omits Guixin and is named Muzhansi San, primarily treating hard and knotted carbuncles and sores. If already necrotic, it promotes rapid healing; if not yet necrotic, it prevents abscess formation and resolves the condition directly. (Zhang Wenzhong's version omits Guixin. Liu Juanzi stated: This is a formula from Hua Tuo.)
For large sores where heat has subsided but pus and blood continue to flow, and the tissue within the sore is empty and painful:
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huang [likely Huangqi/Astragali Radix], Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) — two taels, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) — two fen, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) — two pieces, Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Semen Rubrum) — five he, soaked in wine and boiled.
The above fourteen ingredients are processed and sifted. Take one fangcun bi with wine, three times daily and once at night.
Formula for treating carbuncles and sores on the back:
Zhuti (Porci Pes) — one whole foot, prepared as food; Huang [likely Huangqi/Astragali Radix]; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma); Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) — each three taels; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) — two taels; Qiangweigen (Rosae Multiflorae Radix); Yelangyagen [likely Acanthopanacis Senticosi Radix or similar] — each eight taels.
The above seven ingredients are chopped. Use three dou of water, boil the pig's foot until cooked, clarify to obtain two dou of liquid, then add the other herbs. Boil down to one dou, strain, and wash the sore. Leave on for about the duration of a meal, wipe dry with a cloth, and apply Shengrou Gao (Raw Flesh Ointment). Apply twice daily. If pain increases, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), two taels each.
Another formula for treating carbuncles and sores on the ten fingers, arising in the bladder region, or malignant flesh growing after a back carbuncle:
Zhuti (Porci Pes) — one whole foot, prepared as food; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix); Xiong [Chuanxiong/Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma]; Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix); Duohuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix); Mangcao (Herba Siegesbeckiae) — each one tael.
The above eight ingredients are chopped. Use three dou of water, boil the pig's foot to obtain eight sheng of liquid, strain, add the remaining herbs, and boil down to four sheng. Strain again. Soak the sore for about the duration of a meal, wash, wipe dry, and apply Shexiang Gao (Musk Ointment).
