To treat Wind-stroke (Zhongfeng), the pulse is floating on the exterior (Yang) and weak on the interior (Yin). A floating Yang pulse indicates spontaneous heat emission, while a weak Yin pulse indicates spontaneous sweating. The patient experiences slight aversion to wind, shivering aversion to cold, mild fever (as if covered by feathers), nasal congestion with roaring sounds, and dry retching. Formula:
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 3 liang, Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 3 liang, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) 3 liang, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 2 liang, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) 12 pieces.
Process the above five herbs: crush three of them into coarse powder, slice the ginger, and tear open the dates. Boil the dates in seven sheng of water until soft, then strain out the dregs. Add the remaining herbs to the liquid. If the water level drops too low, add more water. Boil until slightly bubbling to obtain three sheng of decoction, then strain. Administer one sheng per dose, three times daily. For children, adjust the dosage according to their condition. If excessive sweating occurs after the initial dose, slightly extend the interval between doses. If no sweating occurs, slightly shorten the interval to ensure continuous medicinal effect to induce sweating. After taking the medicine, care for oneself as instructed, specifically avoiding wind exposure. If the condition is severe, it is advisable to take the medicine at night. If one dose does not resolve the illness and the symptoms remain unchanged, administer another dose. In some cases, patients may not sweat even after two or three doses until recovery. Shortly after taking this medicine, drink hot congee to assist the medicinal power.
To treat Cold damage (Shanghan) manifesting as headache and backache, body and joint pain, fever with aversion to cold, anhidrosis (absence of sweating), and wheezing. Formula:
Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction): Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) 3 liang, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 1 liang, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1 liang, Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 70 pieces (use 50 pieces if wheezing is not severe).
Process the above four herbs into coarse powder. Boil Mahuang in nine sheng of water until reduced by two sheng, skim off the foam, then add the other herbs. Boil to obtain two and a half sheng of decoction, squeeze out the liquid, and discard the dregs. Administer eight ge per dose. Cover the patient with blankets to induce sweating.
To treat Wind-stroke complicated by Cold damage, presenting with a floating and tight pulse, fever with aversion to cold, body pain, anhidrosis, and restlessness. Formula:
Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction): Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) 6 liang, Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) 2 liang, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 2 liang, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) equivalent to one chicken egg, crushed, Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) 3 liang, Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) 40 pieces, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) 12 pieces.
Process the above seven herbs into coarse powder. Boil Mahuang in nine sheng of water and skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs. Boil to obtain three sheng of decoction. Divide into three doses, administering one sheng each time. Cover the patient thickly; profuse sweating should occur. Apply warm powder to the body to stop sweating. Do not administer further doses, as doing so may cause muscle twitching (Jinti Roudong), which constitutes a adverse reaction. If no sweating occurs after the first dose, administer the next dose.
