A prescription for treating flaccidity of the four limbs, mental confusion, unconsciousness, and inability to speak.
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 2 sheng) Sheng Ge Zhi (Fresh Kudzu Juice, 1 sheng) Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 3 he)
Mix the above three ingredients, warm them, and divide into three doses. Take one dose at dawn, one in the late afternoon, and one at night. After taking the medicine, if you feel a strange sensation in your limbs and they seem to improve slightly, proceed to the next decoction.
Second Prescription:
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng) Sheng Ge Zhi (Fresh Kudzu Juice, 5 he) Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) Fangji Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji) Fuzii Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, Prepared Aconite Root) Renshen Ginseng Radix (Renshen, Ginseng Root) Shaoyao Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, Peony Root) Huangqin Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, Skullcap Root) Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, Licorice Root) Guixin Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, Cinnamon Twig) (each 1 liang) Shengjiang Fresh Ginger Root (4 liang) Lingyangjiao Antilopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao, Antelope Horn) Shigypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, Gypsum) Xingren Armeniacae Semen (Xingren, Apricot Seed) Mahuang Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, Ephedra) Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, Saposhnikovia Root) (each 1.5 liang)
Chop the above sixteen ingredients. Boil with seven sheng of water until reduced by half. Add Zhu Li and continue boiling to obtain two sheng five he. Divide into three doses. Aim for sweating. Administer another dose after an interval of five days. Frequently administer three doses. As symptoms gradually subside, still proceed to the following prescription.
Third Prescription:
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 3 sheng) Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, Saposhnikovia Root) Shengma Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, Black Cohosh Rhizome) Lingyangjiao Antilopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao, Antelope Horn) Fangji Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, Stephania Root) Guixin Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, Cinnamon Twig) Xiongnu (Note: Text says "Xiong", likely referring to Chuanxiong or similar, but strictly extracting "Xiong" as per text context implies a typo or abbreviation, usually Chuanxiong in this context, but here listed separately from previous. The text lists "Fangfeng, Shengma, Lingyangjiao, Fangji, Guixin, Xiong" each 2 liang. I will extract "Xiong" as is, though it likely refers to a herb like Chuanxiong or is a typo for something else. Given standard formulas, it might be a typo for Chuanxiong which was already listed? No, it's a new list. Let's assume it's a specific herb name or typo. However, looking at the source, it often lists Chuanxiong. I will extract "Xiong" as a potential entity or ignore if unclear. Actually, in many editions, this line includes Chuanxiong. I will treat "Xiong" as a distinct term found in text.) *Correction*: The text says "Fangfeng, Shengma, Lingyangjiao, Fangji, Guixin, Xiong (each 2 liang)". "Xiong" is likely a truncation of Chuanxiong or a specific local name. I will list it as extracted.
Mahuang Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, Ephedra, 3 liang)
Chop the above eight ingredients. Boil with four sheng of water combined with Zhu Li to obtain two sheng half. Divide into three doses. Take one dose every two days. For routine use, adding Duhuo Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, Pubescent Angelica Root) 3 liang is best. This prescription is miraculous and effective; frequently administer three doses. If hands and feet are cold, add Shengjiang Fresh Ginger Root (Shengjiang, Ginger) 5 liang and Baizhu Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, Large-headed Atractylodes Rhizome) 2 liang. If the condition persists, proceed to the following prescription.
Fourth Prescription:
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng) Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, Licorice Root) (Another version uses Gegen Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 2 liang) Renshen Ginseng Radix (Renshen, Ginseng Root) Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, Ligusticum Rhizome) Duhuo Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, Pubescent Angelica Root) Shengma Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, Black Cohosh Rhizome) (each 1 liang) Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, Saposhnikovia Root) Mahuang Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, Ephedra)
Chop the above seventeen ingredients. Boil with eight sheng of water until reduced by half. Add Zhu Li and boil to obtain two sheng half. Divide into three doses. The interval between doses should be equivalent to the time it takes a person to walk ten li. Take again. If there is qi stagnation, add Jupi Tangerinae Pericarpium (Jupi, Tangerine Peel), Niuxiu Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxiu, Achyranthes Root), and Wujia Pi Acanthopanacis Cortex (Wujia Pi, Acanthopanax Bark) 1 liang.
For patients with Feng Fei (Wind Paralysis/Stroke sequelae) who have recovered after taking the previous decoctions, this wind-dispelling prescription can be taken regularly.
Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, Saposhnikovia Root) Fangji Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, Stephania Root) Duhuo Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo, Pubescent Angelica Root) Qinjiao Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao, Greater Gentian Root) Huangqi Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, Astragalus Root) Shaoyao Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, Peony Root) Renshen Ginseng Radix (Renshen, Ginseng Root) Baizhu Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, Large-headed Atractylodes Rhizome) Fushen Poria Cum Pinus Radix (Fushen, Poria with Pine Roots) Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, Ligusticum Rhizome) Yuanzhi Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, Milkwort Root) Shengma Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, Black Cohosh Rhizome) Shihu Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, Dendrobium Stem) Niuxiu Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxiu, Achyranthes Root) Lingyangjiao Antilopis Cornu (Lingyangjiao, Antelope Horn) Danshen Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen, Salvia Root) Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, Licorice Root) Houpo Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo, Magnolia Bark) Tianmendong Asparagi Racemosi Rhizoma (Tianmendong, Asparagus Rhizome) Wujia Pi Acanthopanacis Cortex (Wujia Pi, Acanthopanax Bark) Digupi Lycii Cortex (Digupi, Lycium Bark) Huangqin Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, Skullcap Root) (*Qianjin Yifang* uses Shuyu Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Guixin Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, Cinnamon Twig) (each 1 liang, some say each 4 liang) Dihuang Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Dihuang, Prepared Rehmannia Root) Jupi Tangerinae Pericarpium (Jupi, Tangerine Peel) Shengjiang Fresh Ginger Root (Shengjiang, Ginger) Mahuang Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, Ephedra) (each 3 liang) Binglang Arecae Semen (Binglang, Betel Nut) Benligustici Rhizoma (Ben, Lovage Rhizome) (*Qianjin Yifang* uses Fuzii Lateralis Radix Preparata) Duzhong Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, Eucommia Bark) (*Qianjin Yifang* uses Maidong Ophiopogonis Radix) Wuxijiao Rhinocerotis Cornu (Wuxijiao, Rhino Horn) (each 2 liang, *Qianjin Yifang* uses Shanzhuyu Corni Fructus) Yiyiren Coicis Semen (Yiyiren, Job's Tears) (1 sheng, Shigao Gypsum 6 liang, some say 3 liang)
Pound and sieve the above thirty-three ingredients into a coarse powder. Mix thoroughly. For each dose, use three sheng of water and three liang of herbs. Boil to obtain one sheng. Filter through silk cloth to remove dregs. Take all at once. Aim for sweating. Take once daily. If you feel heat and irritability in the heart/chest, use Zhu Li instead of water for boiling.
