Formula for treating carbuncles, furuncles, metallic injuries (traumas caused by metal weapons), and tissue necrosis.
She Xian Cao (Omphalodes japonica), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) (each 6 fen), Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia glutinosa prepared with wine) (3 liang), Huang Lian (Coptis chinensis), Huang Bo (Phellodendron amurense), Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Da Huang (Rheum palmatum), Xu Duan (Dipsacus asper), Shu Jiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum), Shao Yao (Paeonia lactiflora), Bai Ji (Bletilla striata), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Mang Cao (Artemisia argyi), Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), Fu Zi (Aconitum carmichaelii processed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), Xi Xin (Asarum heterotropoides) (each 1 liang), Xie Bai (Allium macrostemon) (one handful).
The above eighteen herbs are coarsely crushed, soaked in vinegar for two nights, and decocted with seven sheng of lard from the twelfth lunar month. The mixture is heated to boiling, removed from heat, and reheated three times ("three up, three down") until the vinegar is completely evaporated. The dregs are filtered out, and the resulting ointment is applied externally, twice daily and once at night. (Cui Shi's formula includes Da Ji (Euphorbia pekinensis) and Du Huo (Angelica pubescens) each 1 liang, and excludes Di Huang, Huang Bo, Huang Lian, Xu Duan, Bai Ji, Chuan Xiong, Bai Zhi, and Gan Cao).
For treating sudden swelling caused by hot toxic qi, where pain forms nodules or hard masses, resembling carbuncles or furuncles but causing headache, alternating chills and fever, and rapid breathing; if not resolved within a few days, use this formula:
Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huo Xiang (Pogostemon cablin), Xun Lu Xiang (Boswellia carterii), Chen Xiang (Aquilaria sinensis), Ding Xiang (Syzygium aromaticum) (each 2 liang).
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed, decocted in five sheng of water until reduced to two sheng, and divided into three doses. If not cured, prepare another batch, and apply the dregs to the swollen area. (Qian Jin Yi Fang substitutes Huo Xiang with She Xiang (Moschus)).
Formula for purgation (draining downward).
Lou Lu (Euphorbia humifusa), Bai Ji (Bletilla striata), Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Bai Wei (Cynanchum auriculatum), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus immaturus), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shao Yao (Paeonia lactiflora), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) (each 2 liang), Da Huang (Rheum palmatum) (3 liang).
The above ten herbs are coarsely crushed, decocted in one dou of water until reduced to three sheng, and divided into three doses. Administer to induce rapid purgation. In areas lacking other medicines, using Da Huang alone is also acceptable. (Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang states: treats carbuncles, erysipelas, toxic swelling, and foul flesh. Qian Jin Yi Fang excludes Bai Wei. Liu Juan Zi's formula excludes Shao Yao but includes Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), treating epidemic hot toxins turning red, as well as carbuncles, erysipelas, toxic swelling, and red eyes with visual obstruction. If heat is excessive, add Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) 2 liang. Jing Xin Lu excludes Bai Wei, replacing it with Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), and Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) each 2 liang).
Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), Duo Luo (Descurainia sophia), Mang Cao (Artemisia argyi), Shu Jiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum), Zhi Zhu (Rhododendron molle) (each 2 liang), Qin Jiao (Gentiana macrophylla), Du Huo (Angelica pubescens), Bai Ji (Bletilla striata), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (each 1 liang).
The above twelve herbs are coarsely crushed, soaked in two sheng of vinegar for one night (or half a day in summer). If urgently needed, decoct directly with four sheng of lard until the vinegar odor dissipates, then simmer over low heat. Filter out the dregs and apply the ointment to the affected area, five to six times daily. (Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang states: use Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) instead of Fang Ji, treating foul flesh, malignant nodules, scrofula, and various swellings caused by wind stagnation. It also notes: this ointment can be taken internally).
