Treats stroke fei (another term for pathogenic factors entering the Zang organs), characterized by the body's inability to self-control, inability to speak, mental confusion and failure to recognize people, limb stiffness and spasm, back pain, and inability to turn over.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (six liang) Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (four liang) Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) (two liang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 干姜) Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (each one liang) Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (thirty seeds)
The above nine herbs are coarsely crushed. Boil Ephedrae Herba in twelve sheng of water; after two boils, skim off the foam on the surface. Then add the remaining herbs and decoct until four sheng of liquid remain. For the initial dose of one sheng, if the patient retains self-awareness, do not allow deep sleep; cover with thick blankets, and once a slight sweat appears, gradually remove layers of clothing. Do not over-cover; then the patient can sleep soundly. If no sweat occurs after the first dose, administer another one sheng subsequently. After sweating, reduce the dosage gradually; combine five he into one dose, and administer only when the patient is stable. Do not take it all at once. Once sweating occurs, the disease will resolve; discontinue use. Dietary restrictions are none as usual, but avoid exposure to wind. It also treats rebellious Qi with cough and wheezing. If there is severe swelling of the face and eyes, allowing only supine position, this formula yields excellent results. For those who have difficulty swallowing this decoction, blowing on the patient's back while administering the medicine facilitates swallowing. Patients previously suffering from spontaneous cold sweat should not take this decoction. For emaciated individuals, a small dose of five he is optimal. There have been deaths resulting from indiscriminate administration of this decoction to postpartum women and emaciated persons; this was due to taking three sheng at once, causing excessive dosage and the turbidity of the decoction. As long as the clear supernatant is taken in small amounts to induce a slight sweat, there will be no harm. (In Hu Qia's Fang, "Jin Gu Lu Yan," it is named Da Xuming Tang.)
Treats Eight Winds and Twelve Bi syndromes, hemiplegia with numbness. Stiffness, spasm, and pain in hands and feet, inability to extend or flex; dizziness and inability to lift the head independently, disordered movements when rising or lying down; or frequent waking from sleep in terror, feeling as if falling from a height, night sweats, erectile dysfunction, leukorrhea in women, and infertility. When Wind pathogens enter the Five Zang organs, severe cases manifest as terror, hallucinations of ghosts coming to seize the soul; or communication with spirits, leading to sorrow, worry, crying, and a sudden urge to run aimlessly.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Wutou, 乌头) Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Shujiao, 蜀椒) Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) Orobanchae Herba (Ruyu, 白茹) [Note: Yi Fang records this as Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma] Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 干姜) (each one liang)
The above fifteen herbs are processed and sifted. Administer one fangcun bi with wine, twice daily. The dosage may be increased subsequently, stopping when therapeutic effects are achieved.
