Preface
In the autumn of the Renwu year, I resigned from my post and lived in seclusion. Feeling that incompetent doctors were rampant and the people were suffering, I wished to rectify this situation. Thus, I engaged in medical affairs via the internet, and it has been three and a half years since then. Like swallows leaving traces on snow mud, there are indeed marks. Fragmented bamboo slips and torn books roughly take shape. Therefore, I write these humble words to record the outline:
My heart is tied to the Classics, my spirit wanders the online world. Roaming within the Six Directions (the universe), movements are no different from insects; swallowing and exhaling within the Eight Extremities, spider webs leave clear traces. The Kai-He-Shu (Opening, Closing, Pivot) mechanism turns, allowing Yin-Yang and the Six Qi (Wind, Cold, Summer Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) to enter and exit; Ascending, Descending, Floating, and Sinking allow Cold and Heat of the Four Seasons to come and go. Heaven and Earth establish their images, Water and Fire symbolize their natures. The causes and conditions within this realm are truly significant. However, because debates are difficult to resolve, the ignorant know they cannot understand; mutual refinement is not easy, and like-minded individuals are rarely sought. Thus, relying on the Classics, I established my own school. Dwelling peacefully in the Grass Cottage, taking root among the folk. According to disease and medicine, I form many good affinities. Dispelling cold and supporting Yang, I restore the source and purify the origin. Consequently, people gather from the Nine Provinces, traveling ten thousand miles; meeting from all directions, capturing everything in one net. The lecture hall transmits voices, with Su Wen and Ling Shu preceding; voice messages discuss diseases, with Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue running concurrently. After three years of rotation, the scale is roughly formed. Repeating a thousand times, the rules gradually become complete. Finally, the simple wheel changes into flowers and leaves, and a thousand jun transforms into a single hair. Carefully using troops, governing the country with diligence and frugality. Nourishment outweighs treatment, and upright methods replace unconventional ones. Because Qi is light and easily taken, heavy substances tend to coagulate.
Mr. Lianhua, a learned and elegant gentleman, skilled in calligraphy and literature, entrusting meaning to the Dao, is a clear stream in a turbid world. He mistakenly praised my clumsy writings, wishing to circulate them. He collected fragmented manuscripts and compiled them into a volume. Editing and proofreading, he spared no effort. Once typesetting was completed, he asked me to write a preface. Therefore, I narrate the general overview and express sincere gratitude.

Declaration of Futai Cottage
Since Western medicine obtained a dominant position in China's medical career, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has increasingly been despised by both patients and doctors. After falling ill, patients often first seek treatment from Western medicine; only when treatment fails do they try TCM with a "give it a shot" attitude. In fact, for many diseases, TCM diagnostic and therapeutic methods are more accurate and effective. Even for many diseases that Western medicine classifies as difficult, major, critical, or terminal illnesses, if TCM practitioners can accurately differentiate syndromes and prescribe appropriate medicines, they can achieve satisfactory curative effects or even cure the disease. However, the true principles of TCM treatment are difficult for people in modern society who lack traditional ways of thinking to understand. Even many students of TCM remain at a superficial level, understanding TCM through Western medical theories.
The uniqueness and brilliance of TCM lie in: the dialectical method of Four Diagnostic Methods and Eight Principles (Four Diagnostic Methods: Inspection, Auscultation/Olfaction, Inquiry, Palpation; Eight Principles: Yin-Yang, Exterior-Interior, Cold-Heat, Deficiency-Excess); the correspondence principle of Six Channels and Six Qi; the concept of balance in the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang; the holistic view of the unity of Heaven and Humanity; the circulation laws of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), Xue (Blood), and Jin Ye (Body Fluids); and the Five Elements generation and restriction attributes of Meridians and Zang-Fu Organs. These jointly constitute a treatment system where theory, method, formula, and medicine are consistent throughout. However, in the process of prescribing medicines, current TCM practitioners often think more about Western medical test results, are confused by various biochemical indicators, and ignore the observation of patients' intuitive symptoms, even using only Western medical conclusions to explain relevant conditions. In fact, without the basis and guidance of TCM syndrome differentiation methods, even using Chinese herbal medicines to treat diseases cannot be considered TCM. Conversely, if Western medicines are used to treat diseases according to TCM principles, it still remains TCM. For example, Mr. Zhang Xichun is a model of skillful use of Western medicines. Because in the TCM treatment system, anything that can play a therapeutic role can be included in medicines. And TCM mainly uses pure natural medicines, which is advocated by modern medical concepts.
The fact that TCM is not understood by modern people is also manifested in some seemingly correct but actually incorrect perceptions. For example, saying that Chinese herbal medicines act slowly; in fact, excellent TCM practitioners achieve rapid effects like drumbeats upon striking, and sometimes cure difficult diseases with just one dose, which is unimaginable for Western medicine. For example, saying that Chinese herbal medicines have no side effects and cannot kill people; in fact, if syndrome differentiation is mistaken and medicines are contrary to the condition, causing deficiency to become more deficient and excess to become more excessive, incompetent doctors can kill people in the blink of an eye. For example, saying that Chinese herbal medicines treat the root cause; in fact, if the condition is misidentified and wrong medicines are used, not only will they fail to treat the root cause, but they will also uproot it. Strangely, the production and spread of these misunderstandings have almost reached a consensus, as if undergoing unified training. These erroneous perceptions are precisely the mass foundation leading to TCM not being universally accepted and widely applied in treatment. The direct consequence is that some diseases curable by TCM are still described as terminal illnesses today, and the exact efficacy of TCM is still not affirmed by certain authoritative departments.
Of course, the TCM mentioned here refers to TCM practitioners who truly inherited the traditional theory, method, formula, and medicine, not those who diagnose with Western medicine and treat with Chinese herbs, nor those TCM frauds who frequently deceive the world and steal fame with so-called ancestral secret recipes. TCM classics are as vast as the sea, and formulas and medicines are countless. The real obstacle lies in the inability to correctly understand and dispel the fog. The principles of the ancients have actually been explained very clearly, and fearing that later generations would not understand, they repeatedly explained and demonstrated with sincerity. Where is there any secret? It is precisely those shallow-minded people who deliberately mystify and deceive others, afraid that people will learn their so-called secret recipes. Let us ask, when it comes to prescriptions, has anyone in history surpassed Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage)? Zhongjing had long made it public to the world. To neglect studying this and instead devote oneself to those shady secret recipes, is it not extreme confusion and inversion? With such poor insight, how could they truly treat diseases? Originally, there is no such thing as secret; secrecy is a state of ignorance lacking rationality. These people are sleeping foolishly in dreams; how could they have the ability to cure people's diseases?
The fundamental purpose of establishing this forum is to help every Chinese person understand and accept this great spiritual heritage left by ancestors, and to apply this heritage to modern life to treat diseases that modern medicine cannot diagnose and cure. As stated in the Nei Jing (Inner Canon): "In treating diseases, one must seek the root." Neglecting the root and pursuing the branches leads modern medicine into a misconception. This forum is willing to work together with all knowledgeable people to restore the source, eliminate falsehood, return to truth, and restore TCM to its original appearance. When the root is established, the Dao arises. We wish to stand on the foundation with all knowledgeable people who aspire to revitalize TCM and promote traditional culture, inherit tradition, make the past serve the present, and revive medical ethics.
