Chen Zhongwei, male, 8 years old. His father brought him to seek medical treatment, stating that abdominal pain began at 9:00 AM today. The face was red, with an expression of unbearable distress. The tongue body was enlarged, slightly yellow and dry in the center, covered with scattered red spots. The left pulse was deep and large; the right Guan (middle) and Chi (distal) pulses were hidden/faint. There was pain in the left lower abdomen, which intensified upon pressure. During pain episodes, the left pulse felt rapid and agitated. He had eaten at a restaurant the previous night, suggesting food stagnation. The spleen and stomach were injured and unable to transform and transport, so the liver attempted to substitute for them in dispersing and draining. Thus, pain occurred with qi movement, and the pulse became rapid and agitated. It is appropriate to use descending methods. Prescription: one slice of Rhubarb (Dahuang), one slice of Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), a pinch of Radish Seed (Laifuzi), several slices of Chicken Gizzard Lining (Jineijin), and several slices of Aucklandia Root (Muxiang). Soak these in boiling water and administer to the child. After taking half a cup initially, he still felt pain. Observing that the tongue coating appeared moist, I asked if his feet felt cold. Initially, he said he didn't know, but after a moment, he said they were cold, indicating cold in the lower jiao. Therefore, I added one slice of Aconite Root (Fuzi) to the medicine, refilled it with water, and administered it again. After some time, I checked on him; the child was sitting by the table talking to his mother, smiling, saying that after taking the medicine, he fell asleep on the table, and upon waking, the pain had ceased. He then left happily.
The dosage for soaking herbs in water is less than one-tenth of that for decoction, yet the speed of efficacy is even faster than decoction. The principle behind this is worth pondering; those who are perceptive will understand.
Thrombocytopenia
First Visit: April 20, 2003
Chen Jinghao, male, 12 years old. One week ago, petechiae appeared on his legs and spread up to his face. One week prior to that, he had a cold and took four capsules of cold medicine. He went to Xiangfan City First Hospital for treatment. Platelet count was found to be less than 400 (unit implied as thousands/microliter or ten thousands/mm³ based on context, though text says 'bu zu 400'), and he was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia. After platelet transfusion, high-dose hormones were used for maintenance.
The patient's complexion was sallow and dark, with a bluish tint in the whites of the eyes. The pupils were pure black. In the Gen position (Northeast, corresponding to specific areas of the eye/body in Bagua theory), there was a red spot like a thread end; the Kun position (Southwest) was slightly dark. The tongue was enlarged, slippery and wet, with a slightly white color. The pulse in the right three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) was tight internally and large externally, showing signs of external rejection (Wai Ge - Yin-Yang separation). The left three positions were floating and large. He felt thirsty and wanted to drink hot water, drinking large amounts, two to three cups daily. Urination was frequent, three to four times a day, yellow-green in color, abundant but not urgent. He felt abdominal distension but could still eat. Stool was dry, small in quantity, black, and difficult to pass.
Comprehensive judgment indicates this is a syndrome of cold invading the Kan Palace (North, Water element, corresponding to Kidney) and the departure of Primordial Yang outward. Urgent action is needed to guide the Dragon back to the sea (guide fire downward) and lead fire back to its source, allowing the cold invading the bone marrow to dissipate outward, thus resolving the disease naturally. Prescribed Hengyi Fubai Tang with modifications:
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 9g, Angelica Sinensis (Danggui) 9g, White Peony Root (Baishao) 9g, Glehnia Root (Shashen) 12g, Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) 6g, Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) 3g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 5g, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) 10g, Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) 9g, Poria (Fuling) 9g, Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao) 6g, Jujube (Dazao) 5 pieces, Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root (Danshen) 12g, Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Aconite Root (Fuzi) 15g.
Decoct seven bowls of water until two bowls remain. Take one bowl at 12:00 PM and one bowl at 6:00 PM. Instructed to take seven doses first. Reduce hormone dosage by one-third during the first dose, reduce by another one-third during the second dose, and stop completely after the third dose.
Second Visit: April 27
Took six doses of medicine; hormones were stopped completely during the fourth dose. The pulse rate had originally dropped to the 60s, but midway through treatment, he took medication to prevent SARS, after which the pulse rate rose to over 120 beats per minute. Complexion turned yellow, palms felt hot. Left three positions were rapid and large; right three positions were also large, but the external rejection pattern had decreased. Tongue remained enlarged, with slight yellow greasy coating at the rear. The red spot like a thread end in the Gen position of the eye had faded. Continue taking the previous prescription for ten doses.
Third Visit: May 9
Total of seventeen doses taken. Today, platelet count was 137,000, still lower than the 217,000 after the first transfusion, but within the normal range. Bluish tint in whites of eyes has faded, tongue is no longer enlarged, and the red spot in the Gen position has disappeared. Pulse still shows deep and tight qualities, complexion remains sallow. Prescribed Maibei Fuzi Lizhong Tang for five doses.
Fourth Visit: May 16
Eyes are clear and clean. Tongue is slightly enlarged and greasy. Left Guan and Chi positions show slight tightness and choppy quality. Right pulse is slightly floating and large; Chi position shows signs of agitation. Stool alternates between dry and loose. Again, consolidating treatment:
Angelica Sinensis (Danggui) 20g, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 30g, White Peony Root (Baishao) 15g, Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) 10g, Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) 10g, Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) 20g, Eucommia Bark (Duzhong) 15g, Dodder Seed (Tusizi) 15g, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) 15g.
Soak seven bowls of water for one hour, decoct until two bowls remain. Take one bowl at 7:00 AM and one bowl at 3:00 PM. Four doses.
Fifth Visit: May 24
Today's platelet count is 233,000, completely normal. Tongue is pink-white, slippery and wet; water still lacks warmth. Prescribed Maibei Fuzi Lizhong Tang for four doses for follow-up care.
Follow-up in late September showed no recurrence.
Case of Facial Pain for Decades
Neighbor Mrs. Chen, female, 65 years old. Pain in the Yangming meridian area of the right side of the face, persisting for nearly decades.
First Visit, October 21, 2003. Center of tongue red, dry mouth, external dampness with internal dryness. Bowel movements normal. Eye color red-yellow. Left Cun and Guan pulses large, Chi pulse weak, indicating Water failing to nourish Wood. Right Cun pulse is large when pressed deeply, tight when lightly touched. A gray bruise-like spot in the Qian position (Northwest) of the right eye; other areas covered with red filaments. Grief from losing her father years ago was excessive, injuring Lung Qi. Prescription:
Ephedra Herb (Mahuang) 3g, Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) 10g, Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen) 15g, White Peony Root (Baishao) 10g, Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) 10g, Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) 10g, Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) 15g, Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma) 7g, Licorice Root (Gancao) 10g. Two doses, taken once at 6:00 AM and once before bed.
Second Visit, 24th. After two doses of the previous prescription, facial pain persists, tongue remains red. Right three positions are soft and large; Cun floats, Chi is weak; the tightness in the right Cun has disappeared; Left positions are also large. All indicate Yin deficiency with Fire hyperactivity. Prescription:
Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) 10g, White Peony Root (Baishao) 10g, Raw Rehmannia Root (Shengdi) 20g, Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) 10g, Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) 10g, Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) 10g, Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) 20g. Taken once at 6:00 AM and once at 3:00 PM.
Third Visit, November 2. After six doses of the previous prescription, facial pain greatly reduced, but rubbing with hands while washing still causes pain. Redness of tongue significantly decreased. Right Cun pulse is deep and large, pulse quality is contracting. Prescribed Maiwei Dihuang Wan (Schisandra and Rehmannia Pill) two boxes.
Fourth Visit, 12th. Facial pain returned. Tongue is enlarged but no longer red. Right Cun is floating and large; other positions are deep and tight, especially Left Guan and Chi. Cold signs have appeared in Middle and Lower Jiao. Must clear Upper and warm Lower. Prescription:
Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) 10g, Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) 5g, Aconite Root (Fuzi) 5g, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 10g. Two doses, decoct three bowls of water to one bowl, take once at 3:00 PM.
After one dose, residual pain remained. After finishing two doses, pain stopped. Later visited for other matters, did not mention facial pain again.

My mother has recently suffered from atrophic gastritis and superficial gastritis, as well as chronic cholecystitis. She pays attention to her diet but often eats poorly. Recently, she took Moluo Dan and felt much better. I would like to ask if there is any good method to cure this fundamentally now, and what precautions should be taken daily. A doctor said her Liver and Gallbladder dispersion and drainage are poor. Thank you very much.

History of diseases? When/Where? How cured? Recurrence?
Since 1998, my mother's health has been poor, mainly the diseases mentioned above. First, due to long-term fatigue; second, due to emotional stress. She has spent over 20,000 RMB on Chinese medicine in these years. So please pay special attention, Mr. Sanqi Sheng. My mother's illness can be considered a difficult and complicated case. Thank you for your trouble.

Syndrome Differentiation: This illness is not difficult. The root cause is cold invading the Shaoyin (Kidney/Heart axis), hence sore lower back and heavy legs. However, since it is not in the Yang meridians, the legs and feet feel hot instead. Yang meridians can descend, but Yin meridians fail to ascend. Chronic atrophic/superficial gastritis and chronic cholecystitis are all manifestations of the disease (Biao), not the root (Ben). Sore throat, chest tightness, stomach pain, abdominal bloating, and acid regurgitation are all signs of rebellious qi failing to descend. Little desire to drink, preference for hot drinks, dry mouth, enlarged tongue, indicate cold-dampness settling below and water failing to rise. Neurasthenia and depression indicate Liver Qi stagnation and Heart Qi deficiency. Drowsiness indicates cold invading Shaoyin, leading to a desire to sleep (Dan Yu Mei).
Treatment Principle: Warm Yang and promote diuresis, allowing Shaoyin cold qi to transform into water and exit. Naturally, Yin ascends and Yang descends, legs/feet will not feel hot, lower back/waist will not feel cold. Treating the root eliminates the manifestations; gastric and upper jiao symptoms will heal themselves without direct treatment.
Prescription: Modified Zhenwu Tang combined with Wuling San. Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) 60g, Poria (Fuling) 30g, Alisma Rhizome (Zexie) 10g, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 30g, Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 50g, Aconite Root (Fuzi) 60g (decoct first).
Usage: Six doses. Decoct eight bowls of water until three bowls remain (Decoct Aconite in three bowls of water first; soak remaining herbs in six bowls of water. When Aconite decoction reduces to two bowls, mix in the soaked herbs, boil, then simmer until three bowls remain). Take one bowl at 7:00 AM and one bowl at 5:00 PM. Urination will likely increase after taking; please be mentally prepared. Avoid greasy, cold foods, seafood, pork, beef, etc. Please report effects after taking.

Thank you so much, Dr. Sanqi Sheng. I hope my mother recovers soon after taking your medicine; she has indeed suffered greatly these past few years. Indeed, a doctor told my mother: "I have never seen such a case as yours. Your illness has affected the sinews and bones." The dosage prescribed each time is also very large, which makes me, as a son, feel distressed. Due to family reasons, my mother has endured much emotional stress these years.
I will call back tomorrow and have her take the medicine. If my mother gets well, I will thank you heavily.
Additionally, I want to ask you, do you believe in the existence of ghosts and spirits?
Sanqi Sheng
2002/10/17 22:19
No need for politeness. As long as the illness is cured, it is the greatest comfort to me, proving my efforts were not in vain. I will not accept other forms of thanks. Ghosts and spirits are real existences, belonging to one of the Six Realms of Reincarnation. I believe in the reality of reincarnation.

You are too kind!
Called back yesterday. My mother said you spoke very well and is very grateful. She will take the medicine as soon as possible. However, we are currently in a rural area, which is inconvenient.
I forgot to mention last time: my mother previously had high blood pressure, though it is mostly normal now. She had rhinitis in her youth, which was cured by infusing high-concentration glucose. Lower back pain started when she was thirty. A doctor suggested my mother's lower back pain might be caused by a retroverted uterus compressing nerves. Please take another look. Thank you.
Chang'an Shaonian
2002/10/19 13:03
Also, someone said my mother was haunted by a weak ghost, and some handling was done. Do you think there is any solution?
Sanqi Sheng
2002/10/19 13:22
That statement is only one-sided and hard to verify. It is better to test directly with medicine. If a ghost can possess the body, it indicates that Yang Qi is too weak. Using medicine to support Yang Qi should have a regulating effect. Lower back pain, rhinitis, hypertension, etc., are all caused by internal invasion of cold qi. That they improved later does not mean true healing, but rather the pathogen shifted elsewhere. Taking the previous medicine is sufficient; no need to change the formula.

Trouble Dr. "Sanqi Sheng" to explain what "Zhenwu Tang Wuling San" is again, as my mother doesn't know either. Thank you.

Sorry to bother you again: You said "decoct eight bowls of water to three bowls", one bowl in the morning, one in the evening, so it seems one bowl is left? Please clarify. Thank you.
Additionally, my mother can only start taking the medicine next week. I will give immediate feedback after she takes it. Thank you. ^_^

Drink the other bowl the next day. Two doses can last for three days.

My mother said that when the weather changes, for example, snowing today, she experiences bursts of rapid heartbeat. Also, blood pressure goes high, and she feels short of breath. May I ask Mr. Sanqi Sheng what is going on? Thank you. (She just started taking the medicine today)

Respected Dr. Sanqi Sheng, after my mother took your medicine, she felt very good. We are extremely grateful and praise you as a divine physician. She also said your medicine is simple and not bitter. It is truly magical.
When my mother took the first three doses, she sweated profusely every day, like having a cold, and slept continuously for three days. After finishing these six doses, her stomach issues, abdominal bloating, acid regurgitation, sleep, pharyngitis, and lower back soreness have all improved greatly. She even wants to eat cold food now. Currently, she still feels somewhat drowsy every afternoon, always wanting to lie down, and her lower back is still somewhat sore/heavy.
My mother recalled that around the 40th day of confinement after giving birth at age thirty, she slept on a cold kang (heated brick bed) in the countryside. After getting up, she caught a cold and felt her limbs and lower back were very stiff. It seems indeed as you said.
Please take another look. Thank you very much.
The physical examination report from my mother's workplace in September (since she was in the countryside, I only got it home yesterday) shows: Blood Sugar BS 5.75 mmol/L (Normal 3.1-6.1). My mother worries it will rise later. Hypertriglyceridemia, TG 2.25 mmol/L (Normal 0.57-1.75). Liver function GGT (Gamma-glutamyl transferase) 54, Normal <40. Others are normal.

Since it is effective, continue taking six more doses. It is best to persist until around New Year's Day; then, the root of the disease accumulated over decades may possibly be eliminated. Do not speak of things being "too magical." Actually, it is very normal for Traditional Chinese Medicine to cure illnesses; it would be strange if it didn't work. I have always believed this.
