Cui's formula for treating cough due to lung heat, with upward rushing of qi and rapid panting, inability to sit or lie down, swelling of the body and face, loss of appetite. It reduces edema, directs rebellious qi downward, and stops coughing, with immediate effect.
Semen Lepidii (Tinglizi) (20 fen, stir-fried), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu) (6 fen), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren) (12 fen, processed), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (Ziwan), Fructus Schisandrae (Wuweizi) (each 6 fen), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sangbaipi) (each 8 liang).
The above eight ingredients are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of a wu zi (seed of Cerasus pseudocerasus). Take ten pills per dose, twice daily. For severe cases, add one dose at night. Gradually increase to 20-30 pills per dose, taken with decoction of jujubes. This formula is suitable if there is a strong fishy odor. If urination is difficult, use the following formula. Avoid vinegar products.
Another formula:
Semen Lepidii (Tinglizi) (20 fen, stir-fried), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren) (12 fen), Poria (Fuling), Semen Kochiae (Qianniuzi) (8 fen, stir-fried).
The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of a wu zi. Take eight pills per dose, twice daily and once at night. Gradually increase to 20 pills per dose, taken with decoction of jujubes. Strictly avoid vinegar products.
Another formula for treating upward rushing of qi and cough, deep breathing preventing lying down, or edema, or generalized qi swelling, or facial swelling only, or foot swelling only.
Semen Lepidii (Tinglizi) (3 sheng, lightly stir-fried).
The above single ingredient is crushed, sifted into powder, and soaked in 5 sheng of clear wine. Soak for three days in spring and summer, seven days in autumn and winter. Initial dose is the size of a walnut, three times daily and once at night; in winter, twice daily and twice at night. Adjust according to the patient's strength, aiming for mild purgation. For acute and critical cases, do not wait for the full soaking time; juice can be extracted through fine cotton cloth and administered immediately. The Tinglizi has a single stem growing upward, with leaves having two angles at the tip, which are thick and short. There is another plant called Goujie grass, whose leaves fork near the base, producing long and thin angles; these must be distinguished during harvesting. The aforementioned six types of symptoms manifest differently but ultimately converge on water retention. If there are masses in the abdomen, or swelling on both sides, or a mass under the heart causing abdominal distension, it is a water disease. Therefore, this medicine requires fresh, ripe, ash-free, clear wine; aged wine is unusable. The aforementioned diseases are all heat patterns. During medication, strictly avoid wine, wheat products, raw/cold foods, chicken, pork, fish, and meat. For critical cases and those unable to lie down, symptoms stabilize after taking the medicine. Patients of all ages should take appropriate doses based on their strength. Discontinue only after complete recovery. This formula is miraculous. If food stagnation causes restlessness after taking the medicine, drinking earth slurry will stabilize the condition. (All from Volume 6)
"Bi Xiao Fang" treats upward rushing of qi and cough, abdominal fullness, and body swelling.
Take leaves of Catalpa bungei (Qiu Ye) (3 sheng).
The above single ingredient is boiled for thirty boils, filtered to remove dregs, and concentrated until it can be formed into pills the size of small jujubes. Insert into the lower orifice using a bamboo tube for immediate cure. (From Volume 1)
