The etiology stems from cold qi in the zang organs leading to dysfunction, where body fluids are astringent and scanty, failing to transport food and drink. Consequently, upon ingestion, food becomes impacted and blocked, hence termed Shi Ye (Food Impaction). Symptoms include pain within the chest, inability to breathe normally, and difficulty swallowing food; this is what is called Ye Syndrome (Impaction Syndrome). (From Volume 20)
Zhou Hou treats sudden food impaction with the following prescription.
Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel, 3 liang)
Cut the single herb, decoct in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng, and take in one dose.
Another prescription

Etiology: The term Wu Ye (Five Impactions) refers to: 1. Qi Impaction, 2. You Impaction (Worry Impaction), 3. Shi Impaction (Food Impaction), 4. Lao Impaction (Fatigue Impaction), 5. Si Impaction (Thought Impaction). Although there are five names, they all arise from disharmony of Yin and Yang, separation of the San Jiao (Triple Burner), failure of body fluids to circulate, and are generated by worry, resentment, and anger. This is called Wu Ye. Ye means blockage and obstruction. (From Volume 20)
Gu Jin Lu Yan Wu Ye Wan (Five Impactions Pill) treats chronic cold in the chest causing vomiting and regurgitation, rebellious Qi obstructing the diaphragm, inability to eat, stagnation of Qi not dissipating, and covers Qi, You, Lao, Shi, and Si Impactions.
Qi Impaction symptoms: palpitations, blockage above and below, incomplete belching or hiccups, severe pain in the chest and hypochondrium.
You Impaction symptoms: suffering from reversal cold on cloudy days, palpitations in the epigastrium, cold extremities.
Lao Impaction symptoms: suffering from Qi separation, fullness under the ribs, sensation of filling in the chest, leading to cold extremities that cannot warm themselves.
Shi Impaction symptoms: regardless of amount eaten, only bitter feeling of blockage in the chest with constant pain, inability to breathe normally.
Si Impaction symptoms: palpitations, frequent forgetfulness, blurred vision.
These are all caused by worry and anger, with cold Qi reversing upward to the chest and hypochondrium. This is the prescription for treatment.
