The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept in the Sleeve) records several methods for treating Shanghan (Cold Damage), but laypeople find it difficult to distinguish between them. Here, a single formula capable of addressing multiple presentations is selected. If one initially perceives headache, muscle heat, and a surging pulse (Hong Mai, a rapid and forceful pulse), within one or two days of onset, prepare this Congchi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction).
Congbai (White Part of Scallion Stem, quantity: one handful) Chichi (Fermented Soybean, 1 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze)
Take the above two ingredients, add three sheng of water, and boil until one sheng remains. Take the decoction in one dose to induce sweating. If sweat does not appear, prepare again, adding Gegen (Kudzu Root, 3 liang); another version adds Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 3 liang), using five sheng of water, boiling until two sheng remain. Divide into two warm doses; slow administration is also acceptable. Recovery is achieved only when sweating occurs. If sweating still does not occur, prepare again, adding Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang, nodes removed), taking until sweating ensues as the sign of efficacy. (Wen Zhong’s record is identical.)
Another prescription:
Congbai (White Part of Scallion Stem, one handful, chopped) Mi (Rice, 3 ge) Chichi (Fermented Soybean, 1 sheng)
Take the above three ingredients, add ten dou of water, and boil the rice until slightly cooked. Then add Chichi, followed by Congbai, cooking until very soft. Extract three sheng of liquid, divide into three warm doses, which will induce sweating.
Another prescription:
Chichi (Fermented Soybean, 1 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze)
Take the above single ingredient, add three sheng of urine from a young boy, and boil until two sheng remain. Divide into two warm doses; sweating indicates efficacy. The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) adds one sheng of chopped Congbai, claiming it to be miraculous and excellent. (Zhi Taiyi Wen Zhong’s *Beiji Fang* [Emergency Prescriptions] is identical.)
Another prescription:
Gegen (Kudzu Root, 4 liang, chopped)
Take the above single ingredient, add ten dou of water, and boil until three sheng remain. Add one sheng of Chichi and boil further until one and a half sheng remain. Divide into two warm doses; sweating indicates recovery. Another method is to crush fresh Gegen to extract one to two sheng of juice and take it orally, which is also good.
Another prescription for treating Shanghan where sweating has been continuous for three or four days, accompanied by nausea in the chest and an urge to vomit:
Chichi (Fermented Soybean, 3 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze) Yan (Salt, 1 liang)
Take the above two ingredients, add seven sheng of water, and boil until two sheng remain. Remove the dregs, add one sheng of honey, and boil for three more boils. Take one sheng in one dose; lie down quietly and expect vomiting. If no vomiting occurs, take another sheng; vomiting indicates efficacy.
Another prescription:
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 3 fen) Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 1 fen) Gudi (Momordicae Fructus) Xiaochidou (Adzuki Bean, each 14 seeds)
Chop the above four ingredients, add one sheng of water, and boil until half a sheng remains. Take in one dose; vomiting should occur. If vomiting persists indefinitely, consume Congchi Zhou (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Porridge) to resolve the symptoms, which will certainly stop. Avoid consuming Haizao (Sargassum) and Songcai (Chinese Cabbage).
Another prescription:
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each 2 liang) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, half a jin)
Chop the above three ingredients, add eight sheng of water, and decoct until two sheng remain. Take one sheng; toxic substances may be expelled through vomiting or purgation. Avoid consuming Wuyi (Pistacia Chinensis Gum Resin).
