The *Shanfan Lun* (Treatise on Deleting Redundancies) states: For those suffering from Lung Consumption (Fei Lao), one should tonify the Kidney Qi to benefit the body. When Kidney Qi is robust, it can resonate with and nourish Lung Qi. If human actions go against the autumnal energy of收敛 (convergence/gathering), the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian will fail to function properly in its converging role. Adhering to this principle promotes life; opposing it leads to death. Adhering to it allows for treatment; opposing it leads to chaos. Reversing adherence into opposition is called "Guan Ge" (a critical syndrome characterized by the blockage of Yin and Yang, and obstruction between upper and lower parts), from which disease arises. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Additionally, *Shanfan* treats Lung Consumption with Excess-Heat, manifesting as panting, nasal flaring during respiration, and painful swelling of the face and eyes, using the Mahuang Yingqi Tang (Ephedra Decoction for Guiding Qi).
Ingredients include: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (nodes removed), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (skin and tips removed, retaining kernels with two embryos), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) (washed, each 5 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (8 liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton), Ancymidis Radicis Cortex (Baiqian, 白前), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心) (each 1 liang), Bambusae Folium (Zhuye, 竹叶) (cut, 1 sheng), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi, 橘皮) (1 sheng), Perillae Fructus Dryocarpus (Gan Zisu, 干紫苏).
The above eleven herbs are chopped. Boil in 10 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng of decoction. Strain the dregs. Divide into three doses. Avoid mutton, maltose, raw green onions, and raw vegetables.
Also used to treat Lung Consumption Heat damaging the lungs and generating lung parasites, worm-like in shape, causing cough, rebellious qi, and panting, or leading to various Diaphragm Syndromes such as You Ge (Worry Diaphragm), Qi Ge (Qi Stagnation Diaphragm), Hui Ge (Anger Diaphragm), Han Ge (Cold Diaphragm), and Re Ge (Heat Diaphragm). These conditions all arise from consumption qi and are named as stubborn diseases beyond the reach of acupuncture at the Gaohuang acupoints. Use the Maimendong Wuge Xiaqi Wan (Ophiopogon Five-Diaphragm Descending Qi Pill) formula.
Ingredients include: Ophiopogonis Radix (Maimendong, 麦门冬) (10 fen, heart removed), Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Jiao, 椒) (4 fen, perspired/sweated), Polygalae Radix Cortex (Yuanzhi Pi, 远志皮), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) (processed), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛) (each 6 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (10 fen, honey-fried), Zingiberis Rhizoma Dryus (Ganjiang, 干姜), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Stemona Radix (Baibu, 百部), Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (each 5 fen), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (40 seeds, roasted, skin and tips removed, retaining kernels with two embryos).
The above thirteen herbs are pounded and sifted. Mix with white honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill, place it between the teeth to dissolve slowly, and swallow the juice gradually. Avoid pork, kelp, Chinese cabbage, raw green onions, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat.
Also used to treat Lung Consumption Heat generating lung parasites in the lungs, using the Sangbaipi Gen Jian (Mulberry Root Bark Decoction) formula.
Ingredients include: Cortex Mori Radicis (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮) from the east-facing root of the mulberry tree (cut, 1 sheng), Potentillae Chinensis Radix (Yelangya, 野狼牙), Cortex Evodiae Radicis (Dongxing Zhuyu Genpi, 东行茱萸根皮) (5 liang).
The above three herbs are chopped. Boil in 3 sheng of wine until reduced to 1 sheng. Take on an empty stomach in the early morning for best results.
Also used to treat Lung Heat, regardless of season or age, where white flakes appear on the scalp, causing itching and rising flakes upon scratching. This is because the Lung is the canopy of the five zang organs; damage from consumption causes Lung Qi to rush to the top of the head, resulting in white flakes on the scalp that rise when scratched. Many people suffer from this, originating from the Lung, commonly known as Head Wind (Tou Feng). Use the Mutou Tang (Head-Washing Decoction) formula.
Ingredients include: Cannabis Fructus (Dama Ren, 大麻仁) (3 sheng), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao, 秦艽) (2 liang), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojia, 皂荚) (crushed, 5 liang).
The above three herbs are finely ground and soaked overnight in rice wash water. Strain the dregs. Stir the rice wash water hundreds of times, then use it to wash the hair. After drying, wash again with a Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina decoction. Once thoroughly cleansed, apply ointment.
Also used to treat Head Wind, where the head itches and white flakes rise upon scratching, using the Wuxiang Gao (Five-Fragrance Ointment) formula.
Ingredients include: Agastachis Herba (Huoxiang, 藿香), Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma (Gansongxiang, 甘松香), Testudinis et Chelydrae Carapax et Plastrum (Jiaxiang, 甲香) (fried), Caryophylli Flos (Jitexiang, 鸡舌香), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) (processed), Dipsaci Radix (Xuduan), Aconiti Radix (Wuhui, 乌喙) (processed, each 5 fen), Lycopii Herba (Zelan), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛), Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (each appropriate amount), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (3 fen, honey-fried), Suis Adeps (Zhufei, 猪脂) (appropriate amount).
The above eighteen herbs are chopped, wrapped in cotton, and soaked in 2 sheng of vinegar (acetic acid solution) overnight. Fry in ointment base. Stop when the color changes indicating the extraction of Fuzi and Huangqin components. Strain the dregs. Following the previous head-washing procedure, apply the ointment. Rub the scalp with hands to allow the ointment to adhere gently to the skin. This not only cures white flakes but also promotes hair growth, making hair black, glossy, and moist. (All from Volume 7)
