The etiology lies in the Spleen, which is a Zang organ; and the Stomach, which is a Fu organ. The Qi of the Spleen and Stomach are exteriorly-interiorly related (Biao-Li). The Stomach is the "Sea of Water and Grain," primarily responsible for receiving and holding food and drink. When the Spleen's Qi transforms and grinds the food, digestion occurs, enabling one to eat. Now, since the Qi of both the Spleen and Stomach is weak, one cannot eat. A Chi pulse that is floating, slippery, rapid, and hurried indicates indigestion and the Spleen's inability to transform and grind food. (From Guangji Fang: Formula for treating slight Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency preventing food intake, coldness in the five internal organs, and occasional mild diarrhea.)
