The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides formulas for treating bruising and swelling of the head and eyes after being beaten.
Formula 1:
Apply freshly cooked hot mutton to the affected area.
Another formula:
Grind roasted soybeans into powder, mix with an appropriate binder, and apply to the affected area.
Another formula:
Take rotten bones from walls, spit on them, grind them on a stone until fine, and apply to the affected area. Change when dry.
Another formula:
Take the soot from the bottom of a cauldron (Fu Yue Xia Tu), grind it into a fine powder, and apply to the affected area.
Another formula:
Lie on sheepskin.
Another formula:
Roast fatty pork until hot and apply as a compress; also roast pig liver and apply it. This is also effective. (From Volume 26)
Wen Zhong’s formula for treating bruising and swelling after being beaten:
Grind Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) with water and apply to the area. If redness occurs, grind rotten bones from walls and apply; this will restore normalcy. (This method was transmitted effectively by the Duke and Attendant of Liang Dynasty, from Volume 8).
Xu Renze discusses: This disease has two types. One type arises from internal injury due to falling or beating. The other type arises from accumulated heat combined with overexertion. If it is an internal injury... [Text fragment]
Jisu (Herba Elsholtziae, 5 liang), Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, chopped), Qing Zhuru (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng each), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, 6 liang each), Xiaoji Gen (Radix Cirsii Japonici, chopped, 6 he), Sheng Gegen (Radix Puerariae Lobatae, chopped, 6 he).
Chop the above herbs. Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain and divide into three warm doses. Take each dose with an interval equivalent to the time it takes a person to walk ten li. If one dose is effective and you wish to take more, taking four or five doses is particularly good. Take one dose every three to four days. If the condition is not stabilized, then proceed to take the following Sangbaipi Bawei San (Eight-Ingredient Mulberry Root Bark Powder).
Sangbaipi San Formula:
Sanggen Baipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, 6 liang), Shengjiang Xie (Zingiberis Rhizoma, minced, 6 liang), Baiye (Folium Platycladi), Jisu (Herba Elsholtziae, 4 liang each), Xiaoji Gen (Radix Cirsii Japonici, 5 liang), Gan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 7 liang), Qing Zhuru (Bamboo Sap, fresh, 1 sheng), Disong (Herba Portulacae Oleraceae, 3 liang).
Pound the above herbs into a powder. Decoct Sanggen Baipi to make a decoction. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) of the powder mixed with the decoction, twice daily. Gradually increase to two or three fangcun bi per dose. Taking it with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) is also acceptable.
Furthermore, this disease has two types: external injury and internal injury. External injury results from falling, beating, or crushing, causing fractures or dislocations in the limbs, joints, arms, head, or neck, with unbearable pain. If internal injury is suspected, follow the previous internal injury protocol and take herbal decoctions. If there is no internal injury and only the limbs/joints are injured, follow the later method of applying single-ingredient Sheng Dihuang paste, or massage with mustard seed and Perilla, etc.
Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens): Regardless of quantity, wash clean, pound until mushy, and boil until all moisture evaporates. Apply while hot to the fractured area. Replace when cool. If bones are dislocated, follow the treatment protocols for fractures, binding with silk and applying pastes made from sheep brain, live turtle, or live mouse. Since these involve specific injuries, they are not detailed here. If the injury is mild, crush mustard seeds and Perilla together and massage the injured area. If injured by beating, falling, or crushing, although sudden shock may not cause fainting or abdominal tenderness, the internal damage is close by. Although there are no external signs, the patient may feel terrified, as if dying. Every beginning... [Text fragment ends with Wu Shengtong].
