According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): In patients with deficiency consumption (*Xu Lao*), if they drink excessively and consume insufficient grains, internal heat will generate in the stomach. If one enters water or is exposed to wind while heavily intoxicated, it leads to jaundice characterized by yellowing of the body and eyes, mental restlessness and pain in the epigastrium, fullness and swelling of the lower legs, yellow urine, and red macules on the face. If purgative methods are used, over time this may transform into black jaundice (*Hei Dan*), presenting with bluish-black discoloration around the eyes and face, a sensation in the heart as if eating minced garlic, completely black stools, skin numbness where scratching does not elicit sensation, and a floating and weak pulse, which allows for diagnosis. For wine jaundice (*Jiu Dan*), if there is mental heat and a desire to vomit, emetic therapy should be employed, and recovery follows vomiting. If urination is difficult, the signs should include mental heat and heat under the feet; this constitutes the syndrome differentiation. If there is abdominal fullness and a desire to vomit, along with nasal dryness and agitation, and a floating pulse, emetic therapy should be applied first; if the pulse is deep and wiry, purgative therapy should be applied first.
