[Xiao Xiao Wan]
This is the sacred medicine for treating carbuncles and swellings, capable of immediately reducing swelling and relieving pain. It is also used to treat "Fish Belly Carbuncle" (carbuncle occurring on the calf) and "Fan Hua Qi Gang" (ulcers with everted edges resembling cauliflower, or anal excrescences). After taking the medicine, inducing sweating by drinking until drunk and covering oneself with blankets leads to immediate recovery.
Ingredients: Ru Xiang (Boswelliae Resina), Mo Yao (Myrrhae Resina) (each defatted, 1 liang each); She Xiang (Moschus); Xiong Jing (Realgar); Huang Mi Fan (Yellow rice) (1 liang). The resins and minerals must be ground into extremely fine powder.
Pound the ingredients into a paste and form pills the size of Raphani Semen (radish seeds). Do not bake over fire; dry in the sun. Take 3 qian per dose, administered with aged yellow wine. Induce sweating by drinking until drunk and covering oneself; recovery will be immediate.
Commentary by Ma Peizhi: If the carbuncle has already suppurated (formed pus), this formula must absolutely not be used.
[Xiao Jin Dan]
Used to treat various conditions including Liuzhu (deep-seated abscesses), Tan He (subcutaneous nodules), Luo Li (scrofula/cervical lymph node tuberculosis), Ru Yan (breast cancer), Heng Xuan (inguinal lymphadenitis), Tie Gu Ju (osteomyelitis/pernicious bone abscess), and Shan Tou (malignant head sores).
Ingredients: Bai Jiao Xiang (Liquidambaris Resina), Cao Wu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Di Long (Pheretima), Mu Bie Zi (Strychni Semen) (each 1.5 liang, all ground into fine powder); Ru Xiang (Boswelliae Resina), Mo Yao (Myrrhae Resina) (each defatted); Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (cleaned and finely powdered, 7.5 qian each); She Xiang (Moschus); Mo Tan (Carbonized Ink Stick) (1.2 qian).
Each ingredient should be ground into a fine powder separately. Mix with 1.2 liang of glutinous rice flour to form a thick paste with the medicinal powders. Beat thoroughly for a thousand times until fused and uniform, then form pills the size of Euryales Semen (fox nut/lotus seed). Each batch yields approximately 250 pills. Administer one pill with aged yellow wine when needed, inducing sweating by drinking until drunk and covering oneself. For cases of Liuzhu that are about to suppurate or have been ulcerated for a long time, divide ten pills equally over five days to prevent the spread of pathogenic factors and stop further progression. If children cannot take decoctions, crush one pill and administer mixed with wine. Note that Wu Ling Zhi is incompatible with Ren Shen (Ginseng); therefore, it must absolutely not be taken concurrently with Ginseng preparations.
Commentary by Ma Peizhi: Suitable for Excess patterns; not suitable for patterns involving Deficiency.
He also stated: This pill is extremely effective in resolving phlegm, transforming dampness, removing blood stasis, and unblocking collaterals.
[Wu Tong Wan]
When large carbuncles occur at critical acupoint locations, taking this formula during the early stage of onset is very effective. It works even better if alternated with San Huang Wan, and it is also used to treat abdominal carbuncles.
Ingredients: Guang Mu Xiang (Costi Rhizoma), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Ru Xiang (Boswelliae Resina), Mo Yao (Myrrhae Resina) (all defatted, equal parts).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with yellow rice paste to form pills the size of Catalpae Semen (catalpa seeds). When administering, decoct Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) as a decoction to send down 5 qian of the pills. Avoid using Ginseng preparations.
