(1) Zhongjiu Wan (Nine-Medicated Pill of the Middle) is composed entirely of mineral drugs. It possesses functions such as bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects, sedation and antispasmodism, astringency, and cauterization. It is suitable for all cases of Yin abscesses (Yin ju, malignant sores characterized by deep-seated swelling without obvious redness or heat) and toxic infections, as well as syndromes involving both Yin and Yang but leaning towards Yin. However, it is not suitable for Yang syndromes. It is indicated for conditions presenting with diffuse swelling without a head, symptoms that are lighter during the day and heavier at night, unchanged skin color, and stubborn numbness and hardness. For lesions where pus has not yet formed, it can resolve them; for those where pus has already formed, it can promote rapid ulceration. According to the editor's clinical application, it has considerable efficacy in treating scrofula (luoli, tuberculous lymphadenitis) regardless of whether it is syphilitic or tuberculous, bone tuberculosis (bagu liutan), yamei chan (chancre), chancroid, malaria, asthma, hemorrhoidal nodules, and fistulas. This represents an early form of chemical therapy popular among the folk in China. It can also be used as an external elixir pill, possessing the advantages of Hongsheng Dan (Red Sublimate Elixir), Baixiang Dan (White Sublimate Elixir), Sanxian Dan (Three Immortals Elixir), and Gun Nong San (Pus-Rolling Powder). It removes necrotic tissue where present, promotes new tissue growth where absent, and can extract pus heads. Oral administration of mercury preparations typically causes stomatitis, but this formula does not. The usage of Lingyao (Spirit Medicine) varies among different schools: some use only Shengyao (Ascending Medicine), some use only Diyao (Subsiding Medicine), and some use both. The efficacy seems not significantly different. The editor uses only Shengyao, which theoretically should be the correct approach.
(2) Jinfeng Wan (Golden Centipede Pill) aggregates various toxic insect-based ingredients into one prescription. Its functions include sedation, antispasmodism, detoxification, and anti-inflammation. It is suitable for Yang syndromes characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain, as well as severe carbuncles and furuncles, back carbuncles (fabei), buboes (hengxuan), and various sores on the upper half of children's bodies. It is particularly effective for nodules, boils, and furuncles on the upper half of children's bodies. Due to its strong antispasmodic effect, it is also suitable for convulsions due to fright, spasms, paralysis, stiffness, vertigo caused by wind, tremors of hands and feet, facial paralysis (mouth and eye deviation), opisthotonos, and hemiplegia, i.e., neurological disorders. Its efficacy in treating tetanus sometimes even surpasses that of Yuzhen San (Jade True Powder). The editor often prescribes Jinfeng Wan in the morning and Zhongjiu Wan in the evening for patients with scrofula ulcers or bone tuberculosis, achieving good therapeutic results. Taking both together can also avoid the side effects of Zhongjiu Wan.
(3) Sanxiang Wan (Three-Fragrant Pill) is composed of multiple aromatic stomach-strengthening herbs. Its functions include promoting Qi circulation and expanding the middle jiao, aiding digestion and strengthening the stomach, relieving distension and stopping vomiting, stopping dysentery and diarrhea, resolving phlegm, and promoting urination. It is an essential supplement for external disease patients with weak constitutions and indigestion, and it can adjust the side effects of Zhongjiu Wan.
(4) Huarou Gao (Flesh-Dissolving Ointment) is a variant of potassium hydroxide with cauterizing properties. Now, with the addition of Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆), its cauterizing power becomes even stronger. All cauterizing agents inevitably cause pain; therefore, Sedum sarmentosum (Lingxian, here referring to Clematis root/Weilingxian), Aconitum carmichaelii (Chuanwu, 川乌), Aconitum kusnezoffii (Caowu, 草乌), Pinellia ternata (Banxia, 半夏), and other sedative herbs are added to anesthetize the local area and relieve pain. In cases of fungating wounds, exposed bone, or chronic sinuses, it can remove necrotic tissue, promote new tissue growth, shed sinus tracts, and dissolve fibrous tissue. Stubborn chronic ulcers cannot achieve therapeutic effects without such potent and drastic remedies.
(5) The arsenic (Pi) and alum (Fan) in the medicinal thread are powerful cauterizing agents and constitute the core ingredients of Sanpin Yitiaochuang (Three-Grade Single-Spear Gun). They can be used for scrofula forming cyst-like structures and for suppurative sores that fail to heal long after ulceration. Once necrotic tissue is removed, new tissue naturally grows. However, extreme pain during application is its weakness. The editor often combines it with Toad Venom (Chansu, 蟾酥), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香), and Myrrh (Moyao, 没药) to alleviate patient suffering, which is quite ideal. This product also has similar effects to Huarou Gao.
(6) Zixia Gao (Purple Cloud Ointment) can draw out toxins, relieve pain, resolve necrosis, and promote new tissue growth. It can be applied to all stubborn ulcers, scrofula, eczema, syphilis, etc. For un-ulcerated lesions, it can dissipate them; for ulcerated lesions with pus discharge and slow healing, it can promote rapid closure. It is also highly effective for chronic ulcers persisting for many years.
(7) The arsenic (Pi) and realgar (Xiong) in Qianchui Zhi (Thousand-Beaten Paper) both have cauterizing properties and can kill Treponema pallidum (spirochetes). Therefore, for ulcerative syphilitic sores that do not heal for a long time and have persistent exudate, applying this paper can resolve necrosis, generate muscle/tissue, dry up pus, and close the wound. It can also be used for all chronic ulcers that fail to heal long after ulceration.
(8) Taisui Mo (Tai Sui Ink) is "Zijin Ding" (Purple Gold Pellet), which has been popular in China for several decades. It has wide applications and potent effects, providing considerable assistance in the field of surgery.
(9) Daizhen San (Needle-Replacing Powder) is similar to Yaotou Gao (Head-Biting Ointment) or Zhentou San (Head-Piercing Powder). For thin-skinned boils where pus has formed internally but cannot penetrate the surface, and patients fear knife or needle incision, applying this powder will cause the sore head to spontaneously ulcerate within about a day. If the skin is too thick, the sore head must first be pricked slightly with a three-edged needle before applying the medicine to ensure penetration. It should not be used when pus has not yet formed.
(10) The herbs in Xunxi Tang (Fumigation and Washing Decoction) have sedative, antispasmodic, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, wind-dispelling, and dampness-resolving effects. It can be used for fumigation and washing in all positive inflammatory conditions characterized by redness, swelling, and pain. Its functions include anti-inflammation, detoxification, and analgesia, representing a medicated hydrotherapy.
(11) Tianran San (Natural Powder) has the strongest tissue-regenerating effect. It can be used for all external diseases after ulceration where pus flows continuously, the wound bed is itchy, and the wound fails to close. Its functions include drying up exudate, stopping pus flow, generating tissue, and closing wounds. It is comparable to Sanxian Dan and Gun Nong San in efficacy but superior in convenience.
(12) Maliang Gao (Numbing Cooling Ointment) is a local anesthetic. It can be used for all painful sores and toxic swellings, having effects of reducing swelling, draining pus, and relieving pain.
(13) Jiedu Gao (Detoxifying Ointment) can reduce inflammation, detoxify, dissipate nodules, soften hardness, dispel wind, and eliminate dampness. It has considerable effects on all Yang syndrome sores and ulcers.
