The verse states: Arsenolite (Pishuang, 砒霜) five fen and Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) one qian are evenly sprinkled on paper, folded into multiple layers, and gently beaten over a thousand times. Applied to sores and toxins, it has excellent efficacy. Do not underestimate this formula; it is highly effective for Yangmei Ding (Chancre-like carbuncle) and toxins.
(Composition) White Arsenolite (Bai Pi, 白砒) [5 fen]; Realgar (Ming Xiong, 明雄黄) [1 qian].
(Preparation) Grind the ingredients together into a fine powder. Take a sheet of high-quality skin paper, spread the powder evenly on it, fold it into more than ten layers, and beat it with a wooden mallet approximately one thousand times until the medicine penetrates the paper layers and turns yellow. Store for future use.
(Usage) For cases of Yangmei Chuang (Syphilitic sore) toxin causing swelling, applying this paper is optimal. It is also effective for promoting the discharge of pus and removing necrotic tissue after ulceration.
The verse states: Taishui Mo (Tai Sui Ink) contains potent Musk (Shexiang, 麝香), cooperating with Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Daji, 大戟), Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae (Shancigu, 山慈菇), and Scutigera coleoptrata (Wenge, 蚊蛤). Combined with Semen Crotonis (Qianjinzi, 千金子), Aconiti Radix (Chuanwu, 川乌), Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowu, 草乌), and glutinous rice paste, it can be taken internally or applied externally. It eliminates toxins from dead cattle, horses, or river organs, as well as mountain miasma. Grinding and applying it relieves pain in severe toxic conditions. It also detoxifies arsenic poisoning and water-related emergencies. For sore throat and swelling preventing sleep, applying it to Ding Chuang (Carbuncle) brings rapid relief like pouring hot water on snow.
(Composition) Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae (Shancigu, 山慈菇) [1 liang]; Semen Crotonis (Qianjinzi, 千金子) [1 liang]; Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Daji, 大戟) [1 liang]; Scutigera coleoptrata (Wenge, 蚊蛤) [2 liang, insects removed]; Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) [1 fen]; Aconiti Radix (Chuanwu, 川乌) [2 liang]; Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowu, 草乌) [2 liang].
(Preparation) Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with paste made from boiled glutinous rice until uniform. Mold into ink-bar shaped blocks weighing one qian each. Air-dry for future use. (Historically, molds used in Jiazi years were engraved with "Jiazi," and those in Yichou years with "Yichou," hence the name "Taishui Mo").
(Usage) Take one block per dose. For severe cases, two blocks may be taken consecutively. After bowel movement, nourish the body with warm congee. For Ding Chuang (Carbuncle), swelling and toxins, facial paralysis (mouth and eye deviation), and trismus (lockjaw), grind with warm wine and take orally. For other sores and toxins, grind with vinegar and apply topically. The effects are too numerous to list.
The verse states: Toxins that have not yet ulcerated can be treated by this method instead of needle puncture. Crotonis Fructus Residue (Bashuang, 巴豆霜) and Realgar (Xinshi, 信石) in equal parts, mixed with one fen of purified Realgar (Ming Xiong, 明雄黄). As abscesses drain pus, symptoms gradually lighten. Regardless of severe toxins or phlegm-blood accumulation, applying with aged vinegar relieves pain.
(Composition) Crotonis Fructus Residue (Bashuang, 巴豆霜) [1 qian]; Realgar (Xinshi, 信石) [1 qian]; Realgar (Ming Xiong, 明雄黄) [1 qian].
(Preparation) Grind into a fine powder and store in a bottle for future use.
(Usage) For thin-skinned boils or furuncles that have not come to a head and where patients fear knife/needle incision, mix with aged vinegar and apply to the affected area. Within about one day, the head will spontaneously rupture. Alternatively, shape beeswax into grains of wheat, ensuring smooth ends. Take three pills orally with yellow wine. After sweating occurs, the head will break through. For thick-skinned sores, first make a small incision with a bi-needle (Beizhen, 铍针), then apply this medicine. If pus has not formed, do not use this medicine, as it would cause excruciating pain akin to peeling a turtle shell alive.
Xu Lian's *Complete Book of Surgical Syndromes* includes the formula "Yaotou Gao" (Head-Biting Ointment), specifically treating abscesses and tumors that are ripe with pus but fail to ulcerate. Its action is similar to Daizhen San, but its composition is milder ("royal way"), as it reduces the pain associated with corrosive action. It is excerpted here to provide clinicians with additional management options.
Processed Frankincense (Zhi Ruxiang, 制乳香), Processed Myrrh (Zhi Moyao, 制没药), Strychnos Nux-vomica (Fan Mubie, 番木鳖), Castor Bean Seed (Sheng Bimaren, 生蓖麻仁), Verdigris (Tonglv, 铜绿) [equal parts].
Grind into a fine powder. Separately, take double the amount of Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) without removing the oil, and pound it together with the powder to form an ointment. Add one fen of White Arsenolite (Bai Pi, 白砒) and pound uniformly. When using, place a grain-sized piece (size of mung bean) on the apex of the lesion, cover with a plaster, and seal. Remove when ulceration occurs to allow pus drainage. Contraindicated during pregnancy and postpartum.
