Song says: Jin Gong Wan (Golden Centipede Pill) contains centipedes, scorpions, pangolin scales, and silkworms; cinnabar and realgar are combined with them, causing phlegm nodules and scrofula to disappear without a trace.
(Prescription) Golden-headed centipede (15 pieces, heads and feet removed, lightly stir-fried), Scorpion (20 pieces, heads and feet removed, washed with rice water), Pangolin scale (20 slices, earth-stir-fried until pearl-like), Silkworm (20 pieces, stir-fried and silk removed), Cinnabar (2 qian), Realgar (2 qian), Rhubarb (3 qian).
(Preparation) Grind all ingredients into fine powder together. Use yellow wine and yeast paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Coat the pills with cinnabar and realgar powder.
(Usage) Take 30 to 50 pills each time on an empty stomach, delivered with warm yellow wine. Reduce the dose for the elderly and weak. If sweating occurs, the disease is cured; un-suppurated masses will dissipate; suppurated masses will ulcerate the next day; already ulcerated cases should avoid taking this medicine. For phlegm nodules and scrofula, Zhong Jiu Wan (Central Nine Pills) can be taken concurrently, 5 to 10 pills, as an adjuvant.
If the patient has a weak constitution, indigestion, or experiences abdominal pain and diarrhea after taking Zhong Jiu Wan, taking this pill concurrently can mitigate these side effects.
Furthermore, the ancient formula "Wu Hu Xia Xi Chuan" (Five Tigers Descend from Western Sichuan) is essentially Jin Gong Wan with additional cicada sloughs. Among my collected copies of the Thirteen Formulas, three versions contain cicada sloughs, indicating that this formula evolved from "Wu Hu Xia Xi Chuan" as an effective empirical prescription. The original formula is as follows:
Golden-headed centipede (1 piece, heads and feet removed, stir-fried with glutinous rice until yellow), Scorpion (5 qian, washed to remove salt and baked dry), Cicada slough (5 qian, heads and feet removed), Pangolin scale (5 qian, stir-fried with aged soil), Silkworm (5 qian, stir-fried and silk removed).
Grind all into fine powder. Form pills the size of mung beans using sweet potato starch. Coat with cinnabar. Robust individuals take 20 pills per dose; weak individuals take 10 pills. Deliver with Smilax glabra decoction. Avoid oily, meaty foods, and all stimulating foods. This treats all forms of yaws sores and buboes, whether ulcerated or not, with reliable efficacy.
Additionally, the "Lin Li Wan" (Scale Carp Pill) found in Zhao Shuxuan's *Chuan Ya Bian* and *Zhong Fu Tang Gong Xuan Liang Fang* shares nineteen ingredients with Jin Gong Wan and is more complete and stable. According to Zhao, this is the "Ba Mian Feng" (Eight-Sided Edge) of itinerant doctors, a specific remedy for all nameless swellings and toxins, particularly effective for scrofula. Therefore, editors often substitute this formula for Jin Gong Wan, as it ensures efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. The formula is recorded below:
Angelica sinensis tail (5 qian), Raw Rhubarb (3 qian), Cicada slough (20 pieces, heads and feet removed), Frankincense (1 qian), Myrrh (1 qian), Processed Scutellaria baicalensis root (3 qian), Scorpion (2 qian), Forsythia fruit (3 qian, heart removed), Saposhnikovia root (2.5 qian), Notopterygium root (2.5 qian), Realgar (7 fen, water-triturated), Silkworm (25 pieces, ginger juice stir-fried), Bovine glue (1 liang, earth-stir-fried), Schizonepeta spike (2 qian), Platycodon root (2 qian).
Golden-headed centipedes (4 pieces, heads and feet removed), processed in four ways: one coated with ginger juice and baked dry; one coated with sesame oil and baked dry; one coated with strong vinegar and baked dry; one coated with butter and baked dry. After processing, mix and grind into fine powder for reserve use.
Pangolin scales (4 liang), also processed in four ways: one liang boiled in Safflower decoction and baked dry; one liang boiled in Soap pod decoction and baked dry; one liang boiled in Lithospermum root decoction and baked dry; one liang boiled in Sappan wood decoction and baked dry. After processing, mix and grind into fine powder for reserve use.
Combine all powders. Use rice vinegar to make a paste for forming pills. Coat externally with 5 qian of cinnabar. Each pill weighs 1.2 qian. Store in porcelain bottles, preserving with 5 fen of Musk.
Take one pill at a time, delivered with hot wine. Un-suppurated lesions will resolve internally; suppurated lesions will discharge pus. The effect is miraculous. The ingredients of Jin Gong Wan constitute only a part of this formula, which is largely similar to Chan Su Wan (Toad Venom Pill), confirming its importance in surgery. Moreover, the initial ingredients of this formula belong to Shen Shou Wei Sheng Tang (Divine Bestowal Health-Nourishing Decoction), which functions to vent heat and disperse wind, promote blood circulation and remove stasis, detoxify, and reduce swelling. Thus, it is a primary formula in surgery, even more comprehensive and reliable than Jin Gong Wan. Editors substitute it for Jin Gong Wan due to its reliability.
Yang Xudong from Liangshan, Sichuan, recorded the "Li Zhu Long" (Pearl Dragon Ball) formula in *Shu Yi Zhong Zuan*, a general formula for carbuncles and sores, treating all types regardless of ulceration status, capable of resolving toxins, closing wounds, and generating flesh. Marked as "Nei Ting Fang," it differs slightly from Lin Li Wan and Jin Gong Wan. It uses 21 centipedes. After processing pangolin scales and centipedes, 1 liang of pangolin powder and 2 qian of centipede powder are added to the mixture per pill, weighing 1.5 qian. Scorpions are processed wrapped in lotus leaves. These are minor differences. See the original book for details.
Also, "Ba Li Jin" (Eight-Cent Gold) from Zhao's *Chuan Ya Bian* treats carbuncles, back infections, and malignant sores. Taken before suppuration, it effectively resolves lesions internally. Its ingredients appear to be an augmented version of Jin Gong Wan, so it is recorded here for reference.
Strychnos nux-vomica seed (water-soaked, skin and oil removed, fried crisp, 5 qian), Toad venom (2 qian), Silkworm (2 qian), Frankincense (2 qian), Myrrh (2 qian), Chalcanthite (1 qian), Centipede (3 qian), Pangolin scale (1 qian), Draconis sanguis (1 qian), Cinnabar (3 qian), Cicada slough (1 qian), Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root (1 qian), Realgar (1 liang), Musk (5 fen).
Grind all into powder. Prepare on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Form pills the size of radish seeds using water. Take full when treating upper body diseases, empty stomach when treating lower body diseases. Dosage is 8 li delivered with aged wine; reduce for children.
Others such as Zhao's Shi Bao Dan (Ten-Treasure Powder), Hui Sheng Dan (Revival Pill) from *Chuan Ya Bu Yi*, Quan Sheng Dan (Complete Life Pill) from *Qing Nang Mi Shou*, Liu Jun Wan (Six-Army Pill) from *Wai Ke Da Cheng*, and Guan Yin Jiu Ku Dan (Guanyin Saving Suffering Pill) compiled by Penglai Shan Qiao are all consistent with Jin Gong Wan. Original texts exist, but recording them all is omitted.
Centipedes and pangolin scales are effective against tuberculous lymphadenitis and should be used in heavy doses. Furthermore, this formula calms the nervous system; adding Musk enhances its ability to treat infantile convulsions and spasms.
