Take one jin of lead. Place it in a small jar and melt it over charcoal fire. Throw two liang of white arsenic (Bai Pi) onto the molten lead. Refine until the smoke is exhausted. Remove, allow to cool and solidify, open the lid (Jin Ding), and the arsenic will have crystallized on the surface of the lead. Scrape it off for use.
Take half a jin of clean mirabilite (Puxiao) in a jar. Melt it over charcoal fire, boil until it turns red and dries up, then extinguish the fire. Allow to cool and remove; it becomes saltpeter (Xiaoshi). Store in a jar for use. This method is suitable for excess heat syndromes but not for deficiency heat syndromes.
Take toads regardless of size; their secretions are all medicinal. Use wide copper tweezers to pinch the fleshy protuberance above the toad's brow ridge, pulling slightly tight to extract the secretion (Su), which condenses in the tweezers. If there is too much, scrape it down. Dry in the shade for use. The toads from which the secretion was taken should be kept away from wind for two days, then returned to a grassy area, so they will naturally survive without harm. If exposed to wind immediately after extraction, causing fluid discharge, they will suffer from tetanus (Po Shang Feng) and die in agony.
Take two consecutive sections of large bamboo. Cut away half of the outer green skin with a knife. Secure the middle of the nodes with bricks and submerge them in a large manure pit. After one year, retrieve them and soak in running water for one day. Retrieve again, drill open the node holes, and collect the liquid fecal filtrate (Fen Qing) inside. Store in porcelain jars. This medicine is suitable for cases of arsenic poisoning, pufferfish poisoning, Yang-toxin typhoid with mania, ding sores, sand diseases, where toxic qi has entered the interior, presenting with irritability, dry mouth, thirst for drinking, and a large, forceful pulse.
For Da Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) one liang used in external prescriptions: prepare several pieces as needed. Soak them in child's urine (Tong Bian) to a depth of three cun. Change the urine daily. In summer, soak for three days; in winter, for five days. Then change to fresh child's urine. Boil until the "two fragrances" are exhausted. Remove the peel and navel, thread with string, and dry in the shade. Alternatively, dry in the sun until hard. Store for use.
Take one jin of white flour. Prepare another half jin of flour mixed into a thick paste. Roll out into two thin sheets. Wrap the first sheet around the second, sealing the edges tightly. Steam thoroughly on the day of Qingming Festival. Hang in a ventilated place to dry in the shade. Store wrapped in flour, keeping away from moisture. The longer it is stored, the more effective it becomes.
