Purulent stool after smallpox is caused by heat toxin entering the large intestine. It is appropriate to use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus), and Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica). Alternatively, Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Toxin-Resolving Decoction) plus Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) can be used.
The above smallpox conditions naturally have their own specialized field. Because their manifestations bear the name of external medicine (waike), they also seem to belong to external medicine. Several entries are recorded here for reference.
Method for Reinforcing the Jar: Recently, the Shaoyangcheng jar is used, which can be substituted with a double-handled tea leaf jar. Heat the jar, pound garlic, and rub it all over the outside of the jar. Heat it again and rub again. Repeat this three or four times.
Then, put ginger and vinegar into the jar, warm it, and boil it until dry. Next, use two parts of yellow earth, one part of coal ash, mixed with horse hair, and blend with salt water. Apply the mixture to reinforce the jar to a thickness of one finger's width. Let it dry in the shade for later use.
Method for Sealing the Jar Mouth: After adding the medicinal ingredients, cover with an iron lid and secure it with iron wire. Take equal parts of Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) and Pyrolusite (Wumingyi), with half the amount of salt (Yan). Calcine all of them and grind into extremely fine powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste.
Then, place two or three pieces of charcoal inside the lid, heat the lid, and use a brush to dip the medicinal paste and apply it all around the joint. Apply more as it dries, until the surface is level.
Another method: Use equal parts of raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao), raw Alumen (Sheng Baifan), and salt (Yan). Grind into powder, mix with water, and apply as before.
After the winter solstice, take ten jin of clean Mirabilitum Praeparatum (Poxiao). Use one dou and five sheng of water, and five jin of white radish, crushed. Put the nitre and radish into a pot and boil until dissolved. When the decoction has boiled sufficiently, remove the radish. Use a bamboo sieve, spread two layers of tissue paper inside the sieve, and place it over a new vat. Slowly pour the nitre decoction into the sieve. Wait for it to filter through and add more, until all the liquid has filtered through. Place the vat in the courtyard, expose it to the open air for three days. The nitre will crystallize on the sides of the vat. Pour off the remaining water and let it drain completely. Remove the nitre. Then, use an earthenware pot placed on a charcoal stove. Take one bowl of the nitre, melt it, and bring to a boil. Stir with a copper spoon. When it is about to congeal, scoop it into small fish sauce jars, leaving about one cun of space from the top. Continue refining more nitre in the same way. After this is complete, for each jar, use three nails driven into the ground in a triangular pattern, leaving one and a half cun exposed. Float the jar on top of the nails. Cover the mouth with a tile. Surround the jar with broken bricks to build a perforated furnace, leaving about one and a half cun of space around the jar. Place burning charcoal into the furnace all around, ensuring both bottom fire and top fire are maintained. Heat until the nitre inside the jar turns red. The next day, take out the nitre. First, spread large sheets of tissue paper on clean, shaded ground. Grind the nitre finely, sift it through a silk sieve onto the paper to a thickness of one qian, no more. Close all doors and windows, and do not allow anyone to see it. After three days, the nitre will naturally revive, becoming white like powder, light and forming flakes. Store it in a bowl, covered with paper. Place another layer of scrap paper about one cun thick on top to absorb moisture, preventing clumping. This product is most effective for descending fire and resolving phlegm, clearing and regulating the zang-fu organs. Strange diseases can be eliminated by taking it; mania and agitation are cured upon use. It searches out and eliminates hundreds of diseases, calming and收敛 the heart spirit. Moreover, taking it does not damage the original qi. Only those with chronic diarrhea or dysentery should not take it. Adults take three to four qian each time; children can take from five fen to one qian. Take it on an empty stomach, dissolved in plain boiled water or scallion decoction. After two or three bowel movements, drink thin porridge. One will naturally feel refreshed and vigorous in spirit, with harmonized zang-fu organs, immediate generation of body fluids, and all diseases as if lost. Another method: Take six liang of calcined Nitrum (Xiaoshi), add three qian of Cinnabaris (Zhusha), one qian of Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), and one qian and five fen of Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian). Grind together into fine powder. Sift onto paper as before, then cover with another layer of paper. Press the edges tightly with a ruler to prevent air leakage. After more than three days, collect it and store it securely. It is also called Yangchun Zixue (Spring Purple Snow). It is most effective for treating loss of mind and forgetfulness, epilepsy and amnesia, infantile acute convulsions in children, and strange diseases in adults. Take five fen to one qian each time, dissolved in decoction of Lophatheri Herba (Danzhuye) and Juncus Medulla (Dengxin). It has repeatedly shown remarkable efficacy, which cannot be fully described. Xuanmingfen (Refined Mirabilitum) is what immortals take to preserve life. For every one jin, add one liang of powder from raw and prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao). Take two to three qian dissolved in scallion decoction. It makes one's complexion radiant and beautiful, lightens the body, and delays aging.
