Gu Cao Feng (Mandibular Osteomyelitis) initially arises in front of the ear, extending to the cheek and neck, with pain deep-seated in the sinews and bones; after a long time, it gradually becomes diffusely swollen, accompanied by alternating chills and fever like malaria, lockjaw, and inability to eat. This condition results from depression and anger injuring the Liver, causing tension and stiffness in the sinews and bones; excessive worry injuring the Spleen, leading to rotting of muscles; consumption of rich and greasy foods, resulting in abundant pus with a foul odor. Initially, the swelling is hard and difficult to dissipate; later, the sore fails to heal. In the early stage, moxibustion should be applied to the apex of the swelling and five fen below the earlobe, seven moxa cones at each site. Apply plaster to drain internal toxins, and apply Zhen Jun Miao Tie San (Miraculous Paste of the True Lord) over the swelling. If there is swelling inside the jaw, puncture with a thread needle to remove bad blood, and apply Bing Peng San (Ice and Borax Powder) externally, so that internal and external toxic factors can be resolved. It is appropriate to take formulas that descend fire, resolve phlegm, clear heat, and reduce swelling. After ulceration, add Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) to tonifying interior formulas. For external putrefaction, use Yu Hong Gao (Jade Red Ointment). Recovery occurs when water ascends and fire descends, the Spleen is strengthened, and the Lungs are cleared. Cases where external putrefaction does not heal, deficiency-heat persists, hard swelling does not dissipate, and the body becomes emaciated and wasted are fatal.
