In ancient times, incompetent physicians killed patients. In modern times, incompetent physicians neither kill nor save patients; they leave the sick in a state between life and death, causing their illness to deepen daily, while (the treatment) yields slow results; doubling the dosage makes the decoction thick, and when thick, the medicinal power penetrates deeply. Physicians of today generally prescribe remedies that are miscellaneous, vague, and evenly balanced; lacking clear diagnosis and decisive treatment, thus the disease cannot be cured.
My friend, Mr. Fu Qingzhu, is profound in learning, precise and pure in essence, and practices medicine in seclusion. He personally authored one volume of *Nüke* (Gynecology) and one volume of *Xiao'erke* (Pediatrics)... [regarding] the reason.
In the past, Lu Xuan Gong, in his later years at home, paid special attention to medicine. Upon hearing of secret prescriptions, he would certainly copy them by hand. Fan Wenzheng Gong once said: "I cannot serve as a capable prime minister..." Heart's...

Suppose a single herb happens to match the disease, but other herbs restrain it, causing the vital energy to fail to circulate; therefore, it is difficult to recover (chài), likely due to this." This collection excels in formulas and herbs, with clear principles and concise language. Even those who do not understand medicine can grasp it clearly upon reading; it is indeed an indispensable book in the medical forest. The intention behind Mr. Fu's writing is similar to that of Lords Lu and Fan; his earnest desire to save people, is there any difference? This is the preface.
In the mid-autumn of the Gui Chou year of the Kangxi reign, Gu Yanwu from Dongwu bows to write the preface.
Differentiation is made through the area above the nose and between the eyes. A red color indicates Heart Heat; horizontal or vertical red veins appearing at the Shangen [root of the nose] also indicate Heart Heat. A purple color... ascends... purges.
For adults, pulse diagnosis is performed at the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions. For children, this is not the case; one only observes whether the pulse frequency is rapid or not. A very rapid pulse indicates Heat, while a less rapid pulse indicates Cold. Among the rapid pulses... floating...
Regarding the Wind, Qi, and Life Three Passes on the tiger's mouth of children: purple belongs to Heat, red to Cold, green/grey to Convulsive Wind, and white to Gji Accumulation (Infantile Malnutrition). The Wind Pass indicates mildness, the Qi Pass indicates severity, and if it reaches the Life Pass, it becomes difficult to treat.
