When the seasonal qi disease (exogenous febrile disease) persists for eight or nine days without resolution, it may be due to the meridians being re-exposed to pathogenic factors, or because the toxic pathogens have not been fully cleared after previous treatments such as sweating, vomiting, or purging. Consequently, the illness cannot be eradicated. Alternatively, if a single meridian is affected and the disease has not yet transmitted to other meridians, the pathogen may stagnate for several days with unchanged symptoms. In all these cases, treatment should be guided by careful observation of the syndrome patterns.
For seasonal qi disease persisting for eight or nine days, characterized by hardness and fullness in the heart and abdomen, body pain, internal and external heat, irritability, vomiting, and restlessness, the Qianhu San Formula is indicated.
Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), 1 liang, with the rhizome removed; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 1 liang, washed seven times with hot water to remove slipperiness; Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), 3 fen, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, with the pith removed; Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), 2 or 3 fen; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 3 fen; Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis), 1 liang, with the core removed.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water, 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and 1 fen of Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam). Decoct until only 0.5 cup remains. Strain the dregs. Take warm, regardless of meal times.
For seasonal qi disease persisting for eight or nine days, presenting with irritability, oppression, panting, and coarse breathing, use this formula.
Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), 1 liang, with the rhizome removed; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 3 fen, stir-baked until slightly red and then cut into small pieces; Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), 1 liang, with roots and nodes removed; Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), 1 liang, soaked in water, skin and pointed ends removed; if double-kernel, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 3 fen; Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis), 1 liang, with the core removed.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water. Decoct until only 0.5 cup remains. Strain the dregs. Take warm, regardless of meal times.
For seasonal qi disease persisting for eight or nine days, presenting with bone-steaming fever, vexing pain in the four limbs, fatigue and oppression in the back and ribs, weakness in the hands and feet, and inability to eat, the Chaihu San Formula is indicated.
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), 1 liang, with the crown removed; Huangqi (Radix Astragali), 1 liang, cut into small pieces; Chifuling (Poria cum Ligno Rubra), 3 fen; Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), 0.5 liang, with the crown removed; Digupi (Cortex Lycii), 0.5 liang; Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), 0.5 liang, stir-baked; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 0.5 liang, stir-baked until slightly red and cut into small pieces.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water. Decoct until only 0.5 cup remains. Strain the dregs. Take warm, regardless of meal times.
For seasonal qi disease persisting for eight or nine days, presenting with pain in the joints, unrelenting heat toxicity, alternating chills and fever, fluctuating severity and remission, and attacks resembling malaria, the Biejia San Formula is indicated.
Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis), 2 liang, coated with vinegar and stir-baked until slightly yellow, with the skirt removed; Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae); Wumei Rou (Sarcocarpus Mume), lightly stir-fried; Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), with the crown removed; Hengshan (Radix Dichroae); Digupi (Cortex Lycii); Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra); Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), with the crown removed (all above at 1 liang each); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 0.5 liang, stir-baked until slightly red and cut into small pieces.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 medium cup of water. Decoct until only 0.5 cup remains. Strain the dregs. Take warm, regardless of meal times.
For seasonal qi disease persisting for more than eight or nine days, presenting with dry mouth, delirious speech, and a preference for drinking only cold water, the Heinu Wan Formula is indicated.
Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), with roots and nodes removed; Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), cut into pieces and lightly stir-fried; Chuan Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas); Liangshang Chen (Dust from the beam); Zaotu Mo (Soot from the flue); Fudi Mo (Soot from the bottom of the cauldron); Xiaomai (Semen Tritici aestivi), stir-fried until yellow (all above at 1 liang each).
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill at any time, grinding it in freshly drawn cool water and swallowing. After ingestion, continue to drink freshly drawn cool water as desired. The appearance of sweat indicates efficacy.
