Dan Nue (a type of malaria characterized by high fever) arises from heat in the lung system, causing excessive qi throughout the body. The qi rebels and rushes upward; due to excess qi that cannot be vented externally, combined with the opening of Couli (skin pores and interstices) during exertion and exposure to Wind pathogen, it manifests as fever without chills. The pathogenic qi resides internally within the Heart and externally in the Fenrou (muscle spaces), causing emaciation and wasting of flesh, hence named Dan Nue. Its presentation includes fever without chills, exhaustion of Yin Qi, solitary flare-up of Yang Qi, shortness of breath, irritability, heat in the hands and feet, and vomiting.
