In ancient times, people consumed raw blood and meat, receiving pure and unified qi. Their diet lacked the cloying nature of flavorful foods, and their zang-fu organs were free from the toxicity of fire and smoke cooking. They followed their natural dispositions, so harm was not severe, and illnesses could be treated with food. If dietary therapy failed to cure, then medicine was prescribed. Food can expel pathogens and harmonize the zang-fu organs, clear the spirit and invigorate the mind, thereby nourishing blood and qi. Those who can use food to balance the body and adapt emotions to dispel disease can be considered superior physicians.
