Treats insufficiency of the Liver meridian in men and women, with wind-toxicity attacking upwards, causing dim vision, tearing, photophobia, and a sensation of hidden soreness and dryness making it difficult to open the eyes.
It also treats chronic or recent internal and external eye opacities (cataracts/obstructions), as well as pterygium (fleshy growth over the cornea) that cannot be cured by needle scraping or other external treatments; this medicine is effective for such conditions.
Sheep liver (one whole, thoroughly washed, membranes removed) Coptis Rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma, Huanglian, 黄连) (remove roots, pound, sieve into powder).
First, pound the sheep liver in a mortar until smooth, then gradually add the Coptis powder, mixing and kneading until the consistency is appropriate. Form pills the size of Chinese quince seeds. Take fourteen pills per dose after meals, swallowed with warm rice water. Complete five courses of treatment for recovery. This formula is indicated for all kinds of eye diseases, including cataracts and amaurosis (blindness). Avoid consuming pork and cold water. (Many formulas for treating eye diseases use Coptis, but this one is particularly remarkable. Liu Yuxi recorded: A man named Cui Chengyuan once saved a prisoner sentenced to death due to official duties. Years later, that prisoner died of an eye disease. One day, Cui was suddenly afflicted with cataracts and lost his sight for over a year. Sitting alone sighing in the middle of the night, he heard rustling sounds on the steps. He asked, "Who is there?" The voice replied, "I am the prisoner you once spared, here to repay your kindness." The voice then revealed this formula before disappearing. Cui prepared and took this medicine, and within a few months his sight was restored. Thus, he passed this formula down to the world.)
