Immediately move the patient to a cool and ventilated place, or administer salted vegetable soup, newly drawn well water, or juice extracted from crushed radish.
If using white radish (Raphanus sativus), crush it to extract juice for administration. If unavailable, use the leaves; dried leaves soaked in water until soft can also be crushed to extract juice.
Crush earthworms (Pheretima) and apply the paste to the umbilicus (Shenque, CV8).
Push down a mud wall, place the drowning victim supine on the mud, then cover them with soil, exposing only the mouth and eyes. Water vapor will naturally be absorbed into the mud, leading to recovery.
Even if the body is stiff, rescue is possible. Alternatively, wrap Sophora flavescens root powder (Zaojiao, 皂角) in paper and insert it into the lower orifice (anus).
Another method: After retrieval, quickly pry open the mouth, place a chopstick horizontally across the teeth to facilitate drainage of water, and pour aged vinegar into the nasal cavity. Wrap calcined magnetite (Duanshi, 锻石) in cotton and insert it into the lower orifice (anus); water will drain out. Alternatively, frequently insufflate Tongguan San (Pass-the-Gate Powder) into the nose to induce sneezing, or insufflate Sophora flavescens root powder (Zaojiao, 皂角) into the anus via a tube.
Furthermore, if the drowning victim exhibits a smiling expression, immediately cover their mouth and nose. If not covered, the laughter will persist, making rescue impossible. Do not suddenly expose them to fire; proximity to fire will cause uncontrollable laughter, which applies equally to freezing victims. For those who drowned and froze, faint vital signs may remain. Place hot ash in a cloth bag on the precordium (heart area); replace when cold. Once the eyes open, administer warm yellow wine (Huangjiu, 黄酒) while hot, but ensure the wine is not too hot.
Another method: Take a wine jar, burn a handful of paper inside, and quickly place the jar's opening over the umbilicus (Shenque, CV8). When it cools, burn more paper and reapply; the patient will revive.
Wrap the patient in felt or straw mats, secure with ropes, and place on a flat surface. Have two people push and roll the bundle back and forth, similar to rolling felt. Recovery occurs once the limbs become warm. Alternatively, apply powder of Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) and saltpeter (Yanxiao, 焰硝) to the inner canthi of both eyes.
Another method (also treats hanging, drowning, crushing, sleep paralysis, and freezing; applicable if the chest remains warm): Raw Pinellia ternata tuber (Banxia, 半夏), 3 qian, ground into fine powder, insufflated into the ears and nose.
Even if the body is stiff, rescue is possible.
Do not cut the noose; slowly untie the binding. Place the body in a level position, align the head, and gently flex the limbs. Plug the urethra and anus with soft cotton to prevent qi leakage. Have one person sit at the head, pressing their feet on the shoulders and pulling the hair to keep the head elevated and the neck straight. Two others should insert thin tubes into the ears and blow air continuously, while simultaneously massaging the chest, abdomen, arms, and legs. Another person should perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, gently breathing into the victim's mouth. Continue this for the duration of a meal. When breath exits the mouth and eyes open, the patient revives. Subsequently, administer clear rice gruel to moisten the throat (do not administer tea first).
Another method: Apply fresh blood from a living rooster comb into the throat and nose (left side for males, right side for females). Use a male rooster for males and a hen for females; revival occurs almost instantly. Alternatively, heat two large bags of salt and apply them from the neck down to the umbilicus continuously.
