The **Dong** (Movement) technique is used when Qi circulation is obstructed; it involves merely lifting and thrusting the needle to mobilize the meridian Qi. "Lifting and thrusting" here refers not to simply inserting and withdrawing the needle to guide Qi, but specifically to this mechanical movement.
The **Yao** (Shaking) technique involves performing the "Red Phoenix Shaking Head" method, where shaking the needle stimulates the meridians to cure the disease. For detailed methods, refer to the specific section on this technique.
The **Jin** (Advancing) technique is employed for reducing methods. The needle is inserted into the acupoint to a precise depth. The patient exhales once, after which the needle is advanced by approximately one bean's width. After pausing briefly until Deqi (arrival of Qi) is achieved, the needle is withdrawn, constituting the reducing method.
The **Tui** (Retreating) technique is employed for tonifying methods. The needle is inserted into the acupoint to a precise depth. The patient inhales once, after which the needle is retreated by approximately one bean's width. After pausing briefly until Deqi is achieved, the tonifying manipulation is performed.
The **Cuo** (Rubbing/Twisting) technique is used when inducing cold or heat sensations. The motion resembles twisting thread, either inward or outward. It should not be twisted too tightly to avoid muscle fibers wrapping around the needle shaft, which would hinder insertion and withdrawal. Twisting to the left generates heat, while twisting to the right generates cold, following the principles of advancement and retreat. Caution is advised against improper use.
The **Tan** (Plucking/Tapping) technique involves lightly tapping the needle handle with fingers during reducing methods to accelerate Qi circulation, facilitating the arrival of Qi. This method is not used for tonification if the Qi is already abundant and arrives naturally.
The **Nu** (Straining/Pressing) technique involves grasping the needle between the thumb and index finger to guide Qi. If Qi does not arrive, the patient holds their breath for one moment while applying forceful pressure (straining). Simultaneously, withdrawing the needle externally helps guide the Qi. If Qi arrives naturally, this method is unnecessary.
The **Qia** (Pinching) technique involves pinching and stroking the skin above the meridian segment where the needle has been inserted, using the hand to promote the flow of Qi. Pushing promotes movement, while pulling halts it.
The **Men** (Palpating/Massaging) technique is applied when pain persists. The painful area is massaged to disperse the pain, followed by the application of the "Flying Needle" technique to eliminate the pain.
The **She** (Grasping/Holding) technique is used when Qi feels stagnant under the needle. By grasping along the meridian with fingernails, Qi circulation is restored. This technique shares principles with twisting.
The **An** (Pressing) technique varies by method. For tonification, upon needle withdrawal, the patient inhales, and the acupoint is immediately pressed closed with fingers. For reduction, upon withdrawal, the patient exhales, and the needle hole is left unpressed.
The **Zhua** (Clawing) technique involves pressing the acupoint with fingernails to disperse Qi and Blood before inserting the needle.
The **Qie** (Cutting/Pinching) technique involves firmly pinching the acupoint with fingernails to disperse Qi and Blood before needle insertion. It is identical in principle to the Zhua technique.
The **Nian** (Twirling) technique involves twirling the needle between the thumb and index finger, moving it up and down. This constitutes the "Flying Needle" method.
