The book states: Yang rises, Yin increases, the four seasons proceed without error. All things inherit the single qi of Heaven and Earth; men and women originate from the union of essence and blood. At thirty days, Yin qi is pure and dense, called Qiangbao (swaddling clothes stage); at two months, Yin qi begins to generate, referred to as Ya (teeth); at one hundred days, named Naixing (milk star); at half a year, called Kua; at one cycle (one year), Yin and Yang are each half; at one thousand days, True Qi becomes abundant. This period relies entirely on the nursing mother. If regulated, there is harmony; if not, there is disharmony. Harmony implies the mother is kind, able to adjust to cold and heat, feeding appropriately, thus eliminating diseases, resulting in a plump and joyful appearance, strong bones and muscles, and normal temperament. Disharmony implies irregular feeding, failure to care properly, such as nursing while angry, causing the child to become evil and wild; or nursing while drunk, causing the child to suffer from fright and epilepsy; or nursing while pregnant, causing the child to become yellow, thin, and suffer from malnutrition and accumulation; or nursing while ill, causing the child to suffer from convulsions and strange diseases; or nursing immediately after vomiting, causing the child to have retching and emaciation; or nursing when overly full, causing the child to have excessive heat and wheezing; or nursing immediately after sexual intercourse, causing the child to be prone to illness; or sleeping with the child, where breath from mouth and nose invades the fontanelle, causing nasal congestion; or excessive affection, holding clothes warmed by fire in cold weather, causing heat accumulation, leading to heat diseases, wind toxicity, and erysipelas; or leaving the child's clothes under the moon overnight, where bird feathers and feces fall on them, leading to the disease of "Wugu" (innocent harm). Or playing with ominous objects, sudden sight leading to fright and collision. The book says: Clothes placed under the moon invite Wugu disaster; children not yet grown, startled by rare objects, all stem from maternal negligence, injuring the child's essence and blood, darkening the complexion, withering the limbs. Birth and death of disease arise from this. Therefore, *Neijing* does not record this theory. Diseases of infants under nursing, especially difficult ones, lack basis. In middle antiquity, Wu Fangshi wrote *Lunxin Jing* (Classic of Cranium and Fontanelle) to predict longevity, passed down through generations, thus pediatric formulas arose. Subsequently, during Jin and Song dynasties in Jiangzuo, Su family pediatric formulas were推崇 (highly regarded), transmitted with efficacy. During Sui, Chao Yuanfang compiled *Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases). In Tang, Sun Simiao paid attention to this art. Later, sages gathered, famous doctors were numerous. However, pediatric treatments are scattered in various books. Extensive research shows only symptoms without treatment methods; Zhang Huan had formulas but lacked pulse and symptom descriptions. Only Qian Yi's work is valued ancient and modern, stating that pediatric pulse and syndrome diagnosis is hard to verify, cannot be grasped by words alone, because infants under nursing and children in swaddling clothes require a specialized department. Ancient saying: Medicine is difficult, and the Department of Child Care stands out among physicians. Although people vary in age, the nature of illness is the same, only young children cannot speak. People have 440 types of syndromes; regulation leads to life, disharmony leads to death. Illnesses in the young are blamed on the mother; illnesses in adults may stem from the Four Qi and Seven Emotions, hunger/fullness, fatigue/labor, or indulgence/errors, all causing disease. Thus, in ancient times, Shennong ruled the world, observing human disharmony, tasting herbs to determine salty, sour, sweet, bitter flavors to treat chronic diseases. Salty softens, sour astringes, sweet moderates, bitter strengthens. Marvelous is the pungent flavor, governing the four directions, then planting grains to nourish the human body. Ancients lived in nests and caves, not deviating from the Dao, thus preserving nature and returning to simplicity, guarding with Dao, keeping Qi and Blood firm and strong, ultimately enjoying a century of life. Thus, wise doctors emerged continuously. Qibo led the way, Li Hua followed with fame. Sad indeed: later generations increased cunning and falsehood, thus failing to reach natural lifespan. Although wise doctors continued, diagnoses were ineffective; profane sacrifices and evil spirits were sought for blessings. This is like extinguishing a lamp to seek light, or sailing a boat in a dry ravine. Though desiring life, one encounters danger. Generally, those who cultivate health must understand the principle of disharmony, then the mandate of heaven is infinite.
