[Formula Composition] Motherwort Herba (Yimucao), Agarwood (Chenxiang), Fennel Fructus (Xiaohui), White Peony Root (Baishao), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi) (all in equal parts), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) (doubled amount), formed into pills with jujube pulp. This is Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill).
Postpartum blurred vision, delirious speech claiming to see ghosts and deities, or mania. This is caused by extreme heat of retained blood (postpartum stasis) rushing upward to the Heart, not by invasion of Wind pathogen. Administer Wu Jin Wan (Black Gold Pill); or decoct Juncus Effusus Caulis (Dengxincao) and administer ground Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 3 fen) with the decoction. Alternatively, administer Wu Jin San (Black Gold Powder).
Postpartum aphonia within one month after delivery. The Heart possesses seven apertures and three hairs; if scattered blood confuses these apertures, causing obstruction, sound cannot emerge as the aperture is blocked. This is not a syndrome of collapse of Yin and Yang. Administer Wu Jin San, or Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganju), Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao), and Platycodon Radix (Jiegeng) (each 3 fen), and take the pill dissolved in this decoction.
Postpartum abdominal pain accompanied by diarrhea. This is due to consuming sour, cold, hard, or solid foods during the confinement period. Qi and Blood are insufficient to transform and digest them, leading to their entry into the Large Intestine, causing dysentery and diarrhea. Administer Wu Jin San, combined with Zhixie Tiaoqi Tang (Diarrhea-Stop and Qi-Regulating Decoction); or administer Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Medicated Leaven (Shenqu) and Cardamom Seed (Baidoukou) (each 3 fen), and take the pill dissolved in this decoction.
Postpartum soreness and pain in all joints. During childbirth, bones open and sinews exert force; new blood has not yet been generated, while retained blood stagnates in the meridians, accumulating and failing to circulate, thus producing these symptoms. This is also not caused by Wind pathogen. Administer Wu Jin San, or Wu Jin Wan. Decoct White Peony Root (Baishao) and Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (each 3 fen) in wine, and take the pill dissolved in it.
Postpartum passage of clotted blood masses, frequent incomplete bleeding. This is due to anger before or after eating; the stagnant Qi from anger triggers blood, causing retained blood to accumulate and fail to discharge cleanly. Administer Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Akebia Caulis (Mutong) and Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu) (each 3 fen) in wine, and take the pill dissolved in it.
Postpartum metrorrhagia (profuse bleeding). If the "Three Non-Restrictions" are violated postpartum, this syndrome should occur. These refer to: unregulated diet, lack of caution regarding hot and cold foods, and imprudent sexual activity. These three factors inevitably lead to continuous leakage. The body will have tidal fever, sinews will be tight and cramped, and the chest will feel stifled and irritable. Administer Wu Jin San, or Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Dipsacus Radix (Chuanduan, 3 fen) in wine, and take the pill dissolved in it.
Postpartum epigastric fullness and rebellious Qi, accompanied by coughing and vomiting. This occurs when blood enters the Stomach and clashes with Spleen Qi; upon encountering food, it attacks the food, and upon encountering Qi, it rebels upward, causing vomiting, distension, and hematemesis. Administer Wu Jin San, or Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Litsea Oilleaf Bark (Wuyao) and Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao) (each 3 fen), and take the pill dissolved in this decoction.
Postpartum heart pain with irregular chills and fever. This is due to dietary indiscretion, where food retention and phlegm bind together, preventing the free circulation of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. Symptoms include irregular chills and fever, alternating cold and heat in the four limbs, mental restlessness, dry mouth, frequent startling dreams, poor spirit, and a persistently red face. If such conditions arise, they will likely develop into bone-steaming consumption syndrome later, which is difficult to treat. Administer Wu Jin San, or Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) and Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) (each 3 fen), and take the pill dissolved in this decoction.
Postpartum black aura around the mouth and nose, epistaxis, and spots surrounding the crown of the head. This is caused by retained blood flowing into the Zang-Fu organs and overflowing into the skin and muscles, preventing blood from returning through the limbs. Thus, heat-binding syndromes form. The patient presents with sallow complexion and constipation. Administer Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo) and Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma) (each 5 fen) in wine, and take three pills dissolved in it. Life may possibly be saved. However, only one in ten patients can be saved in this condition.
Postpartum sand-like rattling sounds in the throat resembling cicada chirps. This is caused by retained blood entering the apertures and transferring to the Zang-Fu organs. The Lung generates Qi, and Qi generates Blood; when Qi and Blood flow through the organ apertures, retained blood collides and forms clumps that enter the throat, causing this syndrome. Immediately administer Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Sophora Root (Shandougen) and Angelica Sinensis Radix Tail (Guiwei) (each 3 qian), and take the pill dissolved in this decoction. Life may possibly be saved.
Postpartum Wind-stroke, or blurred vision, severe lower back and bone pain, with the body arched like a bow (opisthotonos). Within one hundred days postpartum, the body must be nurtured and maintained. If there is excessive labor, sexual activity, or sitting/lying exposed to wind, this syndrome will occur. The patient's body is heavy and unable to turn over. Administer Wu Jin San or Wu Jin Wan. Decoct Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi) (each 3 fen), and Rehmannia Root (Dishengdi, 1 qian) in wine, and take the pill dissolved in it.
