Answer: Disharmony of Yin and Yang, and the failure of lochia (residual blood after childbirth) to disperse, both cause alternating chills and fever. After childbirth, Qi and Blood are deficient and damaged, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang. When Yin prevails, there is alternating chills; when Yang prevails, there is alternating fever. As Yin and Yang mutually prevail, one experiences either chills or fever. If this is caused by labor during childbirth damaging the Zang-Fu organs, causing Blood deficiency and preventing its proper circulation and diffusion, thus resulting in the stagnation of lochia. If lochia enters the Lung, it causes heat; if it enters the Spleen, it causes cold. It is erroneous for physicians to mistakenly treat this as malaria (Malaria). For symptoms due to disharmony of Yin and Yang, Zengsun Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction) is appropriate; for symptoms due to the failure of lochia to disperse, Duoming Dan (Life-Restoring Pill) is appropriate. Further question: How can these two be distinguished? Answer: If accompanied by paroxysmal stabbing pain, it is due to lochia stagnation; if there is only alternating chills and fever without other symptoms, it is due to disharmony of Yin and Yang.
