A pregnant woman presents with lockjaw (trismus) and stiff neck. Contraction and spasms of the hands and feet. Slurred and hesitant speech. Profuse phlegm and saliva, unconsciousness. This can be treated as Stroke (sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, accompanied by facial paralysis or hemiplegia). Use Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder). If there is no phlegm and speech is normal, but symptoms resembling stroke are observed, this is mostly a wind-like syndrome caused by blood dryness (internal wind generated by Yin-blood deficiency), not external wind pathogen. It must not be treated as wind; doing so will prove fatal.
There are toxic drugs that damage the fetus. The condition resembles stroke: tight jaw. Inability to speak. Hands rigidly clenched into fists. Head drooping with spontaneous sweating. Slight fever. The pulse is floating and soft. If treated as stroke, death is inevitable. It is appropriate to use two liang of White Kidney Bean (Dolichos Lablab Semen), raw, peeled, and ground into powder. Mix with fresh well water and take orally; recovery will be immediate.
In stroke affecting the Fu organs, it often involves the four limbs. The pulse is floating with aversion to cold. Limbs are cramped, stiff, and insensible. Sweating method should be used. In stroke affecting the Zang organs, it often involves the seven orifices. Flaccid lips and aphonia. Deafness and nasal congestion. Purging method should be used. When both exterior and interior are harmonious, treatment should focus on the meridians, nourishing the body with major herbs, assisted by fetal-calming methods.
(Wu's Commentary: There is a distinction between true stroke and stroke-like syndromes. Stroke affecting the Zang organs is mostly incurable. If affecting the Fu organs, involving blood vessels and meridians, it is true stroke; whereas affecting skin and hair with hemiplegia, it is stroke-like syndrome, common in obese individuals. Thin individuals may suffer from internal wind due to blood deficiency and fire dryness, where hyperactive Liver Wood generates wind, known as internal wind or deficient wind, which is particularly difficult to regulate. Furthermore, wandering pain throughout all joints is called Li Jie Feng (Periarthritis/Arthralgia). Wind is the chief of all diseases, with numerous variations; one must trace the source to treat accordingly. Especially when pregnant women encounter such critical conditions during childbirth, prescriptions must be comprehensive to ensure the safety of both mother and child.)
