According to *Chanbao Baiwen* (Hundred Questions on Childbirth Treasures): The throat has the pharyngeal gate (Yanmen), and the two have their respective functions. The larynx/throat is an empty passage, the connection of the Lung system, and the pathway for Qi. It connects to the Lungs and corresponds to Heaven, thus belonging to what is generated by Heavenly Qi. It has nine segments to communicate with the Qi of the Nine Zang organs, hence it is called "Ai" (Pharynx). If Yin and Yang Qi are imbalanced, and Phlegm-Dampness knots in the throat, causing blockage in the chest and diaphragm with a sensation of dysphagia as if a plum pit were stuck, hindering food intake, prolonged non-healing may lead to Fanwei (Regurgitation/Vomiting). Alternatively, Phlegm knots in the chest and diaphragm, struggling with Qi, reversing upward between the throat and pharynx to form a mass, presenting symptoms similar to a piece of roasted meat (known in TCM as Plum-Pit Qi). Banxia Houpo Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction) treats women whose joy, anger, sorrow, thought, worry, fear, or fright cause Qi stagnation to generate Phlegm-Fluids. These Phlegm-Fluids resemble torn cotton wadding or a plum pit stuck in the throat, unable to be coughed out or swallowed down; this is caused by the Seven Emotions. Some cases present with fullness and distension in the Zhongwan region (CV12), with uncomfortable Qi flow. Some present with excessive Phlegm-Fluids, leading to rebellious Qi and rapid breathing. Some occur due to Phlegm-Fluid retention in the Middle Jiao, causing vomiting and nausea.
Shenzhen's Commentary: The above two passages describe conditions in women where there is a sensation of a piece of roasted meat or a plum pit in the throat. Xu's annotation attributes it to Cold-Qi, while *Chanbao* attributes it to Phlegm-knotting caused by the Seven Emotions. One belongs to External Contraction, the other to Internal Injury; they should be considered together.
According to *Zhengzhi Zhunsheng* (Standardized Treatment Guidelines): *Daquan Liangfang* (Excellent Prescriptions from the Great Collection) divides Pi, Various Qi Disorders, Shan-Jia, Abdominal Blood Stasis, and Food Stagnation into seven categories. "Feiqi" (Fat Qi) is located inside the abdomen, near the left and right sides of the umbilicus, involving tendons and vessels that are tense and painful. The larger ones are like an arm, the smaller ones like a finger. Formed due to Qi stagnation and resembling a bowstring, it is named "Feiqi". "Pi" (Favoritism/Partiality) is located between the two hypochondria, causing intermittent pain, hence named "Pi". "Shan" means pain. "Jia" means false. Its accumulation is floating and false, causing pain, and moves when pushed. The Eight Jias include: Huangjia (Yellow Jia), Qingjia (Green Jia), Zaojia (Dry Jia), Xuejia (Blood Jia), Zhijia (Fat Jia), Hujia (Fox Jia), Shejia (Snake Jia), and Biejia (Turtle Jia). Accumulations within the abdomen, or between the intestines and stomach, knot and struggle with Zang-Fu Qi to become firm and solid. Although they do not move when pushed, they are named "Ji" (Accumulation), indicating that the disease form can be verified. Qi obstruction and blockage is called "Pi" (Stagnation), meaning Qi is stagnant and not free-flowing. Food forming a lump, hard and immobile, is named "Shiji" (Food Accumulation). Blood stasis forming a lump, hard and immobile, is named "Xueji" (Blood Accumulation). If it is abdominal blood stasis, it is accumulated but not yet hard, and has not formed a distinct lump. Generally speaking, what cannot be moved by pushing is "Ji", and what moves when pushed is "Jia". As for Shan and Pi, they appear with pain; they manifest when painful and hide when painless. Located at the left and right of the umbilicus is Feiqi; located between the two hypochondria is Pi. Located in the lower abdomen, radiating to the waist and hypochondria, is Shan. Fearing that students might find it difficult to understand at once and prone to confusion, I summarize and analyze them systematically.
