(长孙男心典)按∶凡物之多子者,久服之亦令人多子。且菟丝子、车前煮汁,胶腻极似人精,故能益精而聚精;
(次孙男心兰禀)按∶水与土相调,则草木生;脾与肾相和,则胎息成。菟丝子一物而备水土之气,故取之为君;
曰∶于传有之。有令孕妇佩极大之雄黄者;有令着本夫之衣冠,环水井而左旋三周,面觑井中之形,不令人见者;
Siyu Wan (This formula corresponds to the concept in the *Neijing* regarding the storage of essence within the "extraordinary fu organs".)
Chenxiang (Agarwood), Dingxiang (Clove), Wuyu (Evodia Fruit), Guangui (Official Cinnamon Bark), Baiji (Bletilla Rhizome) (each 1 qian), Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit), Mubiezi (Momordica Seed), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Xixin (Asarum Root) (each 2 qian).
The above ten herbs are processed with refined honey into pills, sized like mung beans.
Gu Jing Wan (The following two formulas are the mild medicines mentioned in the *Neijing* for nourishing essence and regulating menstruation.)
Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (one piece, weighing 8 qian; a hole is made in the navel center, size like a soap bean, containing Zhusha (Cinnabar) 3 qian, wrapped in wet paper and roasted; only half is used), Muli (Ostreae Concha) (one piece from Zhangzhou or Quanzhou, coated thoroughly with Tongbian (Child's Urine), wrapped in thick paper, soaked in Rice Vinegar, sealed with salt mud until dry, then roasted with 3 jin of charcoal), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Longchi (Draconis Os), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (roasted with wine and washed), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (burned to remove hairs), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus) (branches and stems removed), Wuyao (Linderae Radix) (best from Tiantai), Yizhiren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) (branches and stems removed), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) (washed with wine to remove silk fibers), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (soaked in wine), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (soaked seven times in salt water), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (seeds and closed fruits removed), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 3 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1.5 liang, stir-fried until half raw and half cooked), Liaoshen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang).
The above twenty-one herbs are ground into powder, bound with glutinous rice paste into pills, coated with Rou Fuzi (meat of Aconite) and Zhusha (Cinnabar), sized like paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, increasing up to 70 pills. Take on an empty stomach with light vinegar soup or salt soup as desired.
Zengsun Dihuang Wan Treats irregular menstruation leading to infertility after a long duration.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 liang, whole plant used), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (8 liang, best from Huaiqing), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (1 liang, cleaned).
The above three herbs are soaked in wine overnight, dried by baking, ground into powder, and formed into pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 50 to 100 pills per dose. If menstrual flow is scanty, take with warm wine; if abundant, take with rice soup.
Wuzi Yanzong Wan Treats male infertility due to seminal deficiency and impotence.
Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus) (each 4 liang), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (each 3 liang).
Form into pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 3 qian daily in the morning with rice soup. Contemporary medical practice holds that: deficiency in the left chi pulse indicates decline of Tianyi Water (Kidney Yin), suitable for combining with Liuwei Dihuang Wan; deficiency in the right chi pulse indicates decline of Di'er Fire (Kidney Yang), suitable for combining with Guifu Dihuang Wan; deficiency in both chi pulses indicates decline of both water and fire, suitable for combining with Shibu Wan. I often add Renshen (Ginseng), Lurong (Deer Antler Velvet), and Yubiao (Fish Swim Bladder), each 4 liang, or add Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 1 jin, decocted into a paste and mixed with honey to form pills, which yields faster results.
(Grandson Xin Dian's Note: Plants that produce many seeds, when taken over a long period, can also promote fertility in humans. Moreover, the juice boiled from Tusizi and Cheqianzi is gelatinous and resembles human semen, thus benefiting and gathering essence; furthermore, Gouqizi and Fupenzi are moistening agents that assist this process. The subtlety lies in the astringent action of Wuweizi combined with the draining action of Cheqianzi, embodying the natural wonder of opening and closing. This is a meaningful contemporary formula.)
Xiuyuan (Chen Nianzu's pseudonym) adds brief notes after selecting several formulas for gynecology. Readers comment that the words are few but the meaning is profound. Someone asked: "Using rice soup to administer spleen-stomach medicines is correct. But why use it for liver formulas? Is it to gather the harmonious virtue of Zhen (Liver/Wood) and Kun (Spleen/Earth)? Why use it for lung formulas? Is it to take the meaning of 'fire returning to earth and earth prospering'? The kidney is located lowest; medicines should act swiftly downward. Mixing them with spleen-stomach medicines might detain their downward nature, causing stagnation in the middle and bloating. Previously, a certain popular doctor treated an elderly woman and noted: 'Elderly patients have yin deficiency; Liuw ei Dihuang Wan should be the main prescription, but the spleen and stomach must also be considered. Adding 8 qian of Jingmi (Japonica Rice) establishes a method for dual tonification of spleen and stomach.' I laughed at this. Now, why take kidney-tonifying pills with rice soup?"
I replied: "The *Neijing* states: 'For insufficiency of essence, tonify with flavor.' Flavor here refers to the true flavor of the five grains. Bian Que stated: 'For damage to the kidney, benefit the essence.' Essence here refers to the essence of the five grains. The *Hongfan* discusses flavors, stating 'planting and harvesting yield sweetness.' Sweetness is the true flavor. Among all things in the world, only the five grains possess the true flavor. Consuming grain flavors lightly can best nourish essence. Yuan Liaofan said: In cooked porridge or rice, the thick liquid that rolls into a ball is the gathered essence of the rice; eating it best tonifies essence. My reason for using rice soup to deliver kidney-tonifying pills is precisely this intent. If contemporary doctors use Shudihuang together with Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Jingmi, there is a difference of a hair's breadth resulting in a thousand miles of error!"
Shibu Wan Treats dual deficiency of qi and blood, congenital decline of water and fire, where young people exhibit old-age demeanor.
Lurong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Shuyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Form into pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 3 qian with rice soup. This formula shares the same principle as Shiquan Dabu Tang. However, Shiquan Dabu Tang focuses on the circulation of qi and blood, which are the functional aspects of acquired essence and blood (postnatal); this formula focuses on the root of water and fire, which are the substantial aspects of congenital essence and blood (prenatal). The distinction between the two lies here.
Xinding Jiawei Jiaogan Wan Treats female infertility.
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (remove hairs, soak in water for one day and night, stir-fry until old yellow, 8 liang), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) (1 jin, prepared), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (soaked in child's urine, sun-dried), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini) (each 4 liang, raw and ground).
(Second Grandson Xin Lan's Report) Note: When water and earth are harmonized, grasses and trees grow; when spleen and kidney are in harmony, fetal respiration forms. Tusizi possesses the qi of both water and earth, so it is chosen as the sovereign herb; Danggui can moisten uterine dryness, so it is chosen as the envoy herb. As for Xiangfu and Fushen, Tie Weng named the formula Jiaogan Wan, and its efficacy is detailed in *Neijing Shiyi*, requiring no further elaboration.
A disciple asked: "Is there really a method to change a female fetus to male?"
I answered: "It is recorded in ancient texts. Some advise pregnant women to wear large pieces of Xionghuang (Realgar); some advise wearing the husband's clothes and hat, walking counter-clockwise around a well three times while looking at one's reflection in the well, unseen by others; some advise hiding knives and axes under the bed, blade up, edge down; some advise secretly placing rooster feathers under the mat. I shall temporarily store these theories without discussion. Generally, accumulating hidden merit and performing good deeds, without concealing others' kindness, is the highest good deed. One need not fast or pray; the omen of bearing a son will surely come."
