The *Duanju* records the treatment of postpartum wind-stroke. For patients with deficiency constitution who cannot take other medicines, the primary formula is Yiwu Duhuo Tang (Single-Ingredient Angelica Pubescens Decoction), or alternatively Yiwu Baixian Tang (Single-Ingredient Phellodendron Bark Decoction). It may also be decocted together with Duhuo.
Chuan Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) (3 liang, finely sliced)
Add 3 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1 sheng, and divide into doses for administration. Those who can tolerate alcohol may decoct it with a mixture of wine and water. Another version uses Baixianpi (Cortex Dictamni), following this same method.
For postpartum wind-stroke manifesting as spasms, with clenched jaw, cyanotic face, and rigid/tense hands and feet:
Administer 2 sheng of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), divided into five doses. Take frequently while warm; this yields great efficacy.
To treat postpartum wind-stroke presenting with clenched jaw, numbness and loss of sensation in the four limbs, and body stiffness resembling opisthotonos (arched back): Formula: Qianghuo Jiu (Notopterygium Wine).
Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (each 3 liang); Heidou (Semen Sojae Nigrum) (1 sheng, stir-fried until smoke appears).
Finely chop the herbs, place them in a jar with 1 dou of good wine, stir, and seal tightly. After about half a day, place the sealed jar in a pot of boiling water (double-boil) for another half day. Once the jar has cooled, remove it. Warm one zhongzhan (medium cup) per dose, administer 3-4 times daily. Adjust dosage so that sweating occurs, indicating recovery.
Formula for treating postpartum wind-stroke with body stiffness resembling opisthotonos and inability to speak due to clenched jaw:
Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (5 liang, chopped to bean-sized pieces).
Take 0.5 sheng of Heidou (Semen Sojae Nigrum), stir-fry together with Chuanwu until half-blackened. Pour 3 sheng of wine into a pan, stir vigorously, filter through silk cloth to extract the wine liquid. Take a small zhan while slightly warm to induce sweating. If the mouth is closed and cannot open, forcibly pry it open and pour the medicine in. If ineffective, add 1 he of Wuji Fen (Avicennae Fructus Exsiccatum - dried chicken dung, stir-fried) to the wine and consume. Continue until cured.
To treat postpartum abdominal hardness, distension in the hypochondrium and diaphragm, cold hands and feet, irritability and heat in the heart with desire to drink water, and dry heaves; joint strain and wind-stroke ailments.
Lingyangjiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae) (2 fen); Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) (12 fen); Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii); Kujie (Radix Platycodonis); Baijiang (Herba Patriniae) (each 8 fen); Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi); Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri); Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (soaked, each 6 fen).
Add 2 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 8 he. Take on an empty stomach in two doses. After ingestion, induce vomiting. After a long interval, consume Dihuang Jiuniu (Rehmannia Wine). Prepare by cutting 1 sheng of Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), stir-frying until black, placing it in a porcelain jar with 3 sheng of hot wine, sealing tightly, and boiling until reduced by half. Consume at will.
