Whenever postpartum wind-stroke occurs with **Jingjin** (lockjaw, inability to open the mouth), it is due to the deficiency of blood and qi, allowing wind pathogen to invade the tendons of the mandible, cheeks, and those surrounding the mouth. The tendons of the three hand-yang meridians converge at the mandible. Childbirth damages the zang-fu organs and injures the tendons and vessels. If wind pathogen takes advantage of this, the tendons and vessels of these three yang meridians will spasm on one side; when tendons are affected by wind-cold, they contract and tighten, thus causing lockjaw.
If **Jiaogong Fanzhang** (opisthotonos, body bent backward like a bow) occurs, it is because the body is deficient and susceptible to wind, which enters the various yang meridians. The yin and yang meridians of the human body circulate around the body. When wind pathogen invades the various yang meridians due to deficiency, it causes the waist and back to arch backward and spasm tightly, resembling the shape of a horned bow.
To treat postpartum wind-stroke with lockjaw, tight jaw, and convulsions of the hands and feet presenting as opisthotonos, use **Yufeng San** (Wind-Extingling Powder). It also treats **Xueyun** (blood syncope/dizziness), rigid limbs, unconsciousness; or sudden collapse with vomiting and diarrhea approaching death. (From Hua Tuo's formula; recorded identically in *Baiwen*, *Jingyan*, *Chanbao*, Chen Shi, and *Benshi*).
* Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica): lightly roasted and powdered.
Take each dose of three qian, mixed with Doulin Jiu (wine made from fermented soybeans); alternatively, Tongzi Xiaoye (urine of a healthy young boy) can be used. The effect is miraculous. For those with lockjaw, administer via gavage; for those with gum rigidity, insufflate the powder into the nose. Both methods are effective. Another prescription uses decoction of ancient copper coins to mix the powder, named **Yinianjin San** (One-Pinch Gold Powder). Another theory suggests using two ingredients referred to as "Juqing" and "Gubai," which are actually cryptic terms hiding the secret recipe. This medicine indeed possesses miraculous and divine efficacy. Generally speaking, in the delivery room, the absence of wind is ideal. One must avoid overly warm clothing, bedding, or curtains; excessive warmth causes sweating, opening the **Couli** (pores/cutaneous interstices), making one prone to wind invasion and fainting. (*Zhimifang* suggests grinding the herbs into coarse powder and decocting them strongly. Scholar Xu recorded: I recall a woman who, after childbirth, stayed in a sealed attic and kept a fire burning. Upon waking from sleep, she was dazed as if drunk and unconscious, causing her family great panic. The physician treated her with this medicine combined with **Jiaojia San**. A practitioner named Zhu said: She will fall asleep after taking the medicine, and during sleep, she will inevitably scratch her head with her left hand; upon waking, she will be fully conscious. This proved true.)
**Jiaojia San** (Formula see Volume 2, Discussion 5). Also known as **Jiaojie San**. (See Postpartum Deficiency and Restlessness).
*Zhuanzhi Funan Fang* treats postpartum wind-stroke with unconsciousness, foaming at the mouth, and convulsions of the hands and feet. Use **Jingjie San** (Schizonepeta Powder).
* Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix)
* Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica)
(Use equal parts)
Grind the above into fine powder. Each dose is two qian. Decoct with one cup of water and a small amount of wine until reduced to seven-tenths, then administer. If the jaw is tight, gently pry open the mouth with a spoon and administer slowly. As soon as the medicine is swallowed, there is hope for life. Administer regardless of severity; do not neglect it because the ingredients seem ordinary. It has been repeatedly used to save lives effectively.
