(This treatise on formulas specifically treats pregnant women with cholera-like disease, but one may also refer to the general formulas selected in Chapter 2 of Volume VII; therefore, extensive citation is omitted.)
The treatise states: When Yin and Yang, clear and turbid Qi interfere with each other, it is termed Qi disorder. Within the intestines and stomach, this manifests as cholera-like disease (Huoluan). If caused by excessive food intake or exposure to wind and cold, leading to disharmony between Yin and Yang, causing clear and turbid Qi to mix, those with weak intestines and stomachs are susceptible, thus resulting in cholera-like disease. In cases where heat disturbs, vomiting occurs first; or if there is heart and abdominal pain followed by vomiting and diarrhea, accompanied by headache and body ache. Fever accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea is also classified as cholera-like disease. This is because it involves the complication of wind pathogen and excess pathogens. Wind constrains Qi, making the skin and pores dense, preventing the free circulation of Blood and Qi, thereby causing high fever. When wind pathogen invades the meridians, Qi rushes upward to the head, causing headache. When wind Qi enters the intestines and stomach, it causes diarrhea and dysentery; when Stomach Qi rebels, it causes retching and vomiting, hence vomiting and diarrhea. Severe vomiting and diarrhea lead to much irritability due to the deficiency of the Zang-Fu organs. Furthermore, cold extremities indicate a sudden exhaustion of Yang Qi, termed Si Ni (Four Coldness). Diseases during pregnancy, if vomiting and diarrhea are severe, will damage the fetus.
To treat pregnant women with cholera-like disease presenting with vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, and abdominal pain:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, remove rhizome) 1 liang, Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, processed with ginger juice) 1 liang, Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) 1 liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, stir-fried) [amount not specified, implied equal], Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) [amount not specified, implied equal], Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) 0.5 liang.
Grind the above into powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 cup of water and 3 dates, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Take warm at any time.
To treat pregnant women with cholera-like disease presenting with abdominal pain and incessant vomiting:
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried) 3 fen, Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) [amount not specified, implied equal], Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, processed) 3 fen, Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) 3 fen, Cao Dou Kou (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus, roasted, peel removed) 0.5 liang, Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Katsumadai Rhizoma, stir-fried) 0.5 liang.
Grind the above into powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 cup of water and 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain and take warm at any time.
To treat pregnant women with cholera-like disease presenting with vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and fainting due to pathogen entering the abdomen:
Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked in boiling water seven times) 1 fen, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced) 1 fen, Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus, sliced) 1.5 liang. Another prescription includes Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) 1 fen, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) 0.5 liang, plus Zi Su (Perillae Folium) for decoction.
Finely chop the ingredients. Add 2 cups of water, decoct until reduced to 1.2 cups. Strain. Divide into three doses. Take hot at any time.
