Ezu (Morning Sickness) refers to the condition where, upon conception, fetal Qi causes nausea and obstructs the intake of food. If a pregnant woman has a weak constitution and phlegm-fluid retention in the Zhongwan region, this obstruction disease occurs. The symptoms include a normal complexion, a peaceful pulse, but with a tendency to sleep more and rise less, heavy limbs, dizziness and vertigo, aversion to food odors, a preference for sour and salty tastes, or cravings for specific foods; some experience severe vomiting, while others frequently spit out phlegm and clear fluid. In severe cases, there may be alternating chills and fever, mental restlessness and oppression, vomiting of phlegm and water, heat and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, and mental confusion with inability to sustain oneself. These are all due to weak Stomach Qi combined with phlegm and Qi stagnation. There are also cases where the person was not originally deficient, but upon conception, the Chong and Ren vessels become congested upwards, preventing Qi from descending, thus causing vomiting and reflux. Another cause is that after menstruation ceases, water dampness infiltrates the Zang organs, preventing their Qi from circulating freely, leading to mental irritability, Qi rebellion, and vomiting, which gradually subsides after three months. This is because at three months, when the Ministerial Fire transforms into the fetus, the fetus has not yet drawn nourishment from the mother, blood and Qi are not yet heavily utilized, and the transformation of the five flavors is incomplete. The Middle Qi becomes congested and solid, and the stagnant phlegm-fire and turbid evil Qi rush against the Stomach, resulting in symptoms like Ezu. For mild cases among the above, medication is unnecessary as it is a common physiological phenomenon; for severe cases, mild medication is required to regulate the condition, and Jiawei Shanju Yin (Modified Ginseng and Tangerina Peel Decoction) is suitable. If Ezu is accompanied by lower back pain, one must guard against miscarriage; Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) and Siwu Tang (Four-Agent Decoction) with Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) are appropriate. Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) primarily harmonizes the middle and regulates the Spleen; lifting herbs should not be used. Since vomiting indicates upward rebellious Qi, using lifting herbs would create a situation of "only ascending, no descending," making the upper part more excess and the lower part more deficient, thereby accelerating miscarriage. If the left pulse is weak and vomiting persists despite other medications, Lixue Guiyuan Yao (Blood-Regulating and Origin-Returning Medicine) should be taken to achieve recovery, as stated in the Classic: "Without Yin, there is vomiting."
Jiawei Shanju Yin (Modified Ginseng and Tangerina Peel Decoction): Treats Ezu occurring two to three months after conception, characterized by vomiting, reflux, anorexia, dizziness, vertigo, and fatigue.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - body), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (2 qian each, stir-fried with earth), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (8 fen, processed), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) (4 fen each), Sharen (Amomi Fructus) (3 fen, crushed), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam).
Guiyuan San (Origin-Returning Powder): Treats pregnancy Ezu with persistent vomiting, headache, complete inability to eat, and failure of other medications.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - body), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) (5 fen each), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with earth), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 liang 5 qian each), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang, processed), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, stir-fried), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, bran-stir-fried) (2.5 qian each).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. For administration, use 5 slices of fresh ginger and 1 jujube as the decoction base. Take 3 qian per dose. It is more stable to replace Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) with Sharen (Amomi Fructus) or Doukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) in this formula. If the stomach cold is extremely severe, users should exercise caution.
