Jing Feng (Pediatric Convulsion) refers to a condition in infants and children caused by fright, characterized by mental deficiency, palpitations, shortness of breath, scattered spirit, and flowing phlegm. The stool is invariably greenish, indicating that wind pathogen is gradually arising but has not yet fully manifested. If the pathogenic factor of fright enters the Heart, the face becomes red, accompanied by nocturnal crying due to fear. If it enters the Liver, both the face and eyes turn blue, with eyes staring or deviating. If it enters the Kidney, the face turns black, with aversion to noise, loud screaming, biting at the nipple, and grinding teeth. If it enters the Lung, the face appears pale white, with panting and weak respiration. If it enters the Spleen, there is vomiting, anorexia, excessive sweating from deficiency, hypersomnia, and a pale yellow complexion. Observing the pulse, a deficiency pattern presents as a Scattered (San) and Soft (Ru) pulse, while an excess pattern presents as Rapid (Shuo) and [missing character, implied strong/tight]. The treatment method involves calming fright, resolving phlegm, soothing the mind, and stabilizing the will. It is also necessary to determine which Zang-organ is affected and regulate accordingly. However, there are methods specifically for warming Jing (Wen Jing), purging Jing (Li Jing), and cooling Jing (Liang Jing). Deficiency is treated with warming methods, excess with purging methods, and heat with cooling methods; this constitutes the therapeutic principles. Nocturnal crying due to fright with a floating voice is easy to treat, whereas a deep, dull voice indicates difficulty in recovery. There is also a condition called "Jing Ji" (Accumulation due to Fright), resulting from prolonged fright leading to accumulation. Symptoms include sweating on the forehead, panting with irritability and thirst, alternating tidal fever, heat in the abdomen, a sensation of movement within the abdomen during sleep, and stools resembling white fat bean paste. The treatment requires assessing severity to guide the discharge of pathogens, along with harmonizing Qi and regulating the Stomach to achieve cure. Generally, if an infant's abdomen is hot, distended, or hard, it indicates internal excess, requiring dredging and purging methods. The primary formulas are Chen Sha Gao (Cinnabar Paste) and Qing Long Wan (Azure Dragon Pill). Any formula with dredging and purging properties can be used according to the syndrome. For intense heat in the Heart channel causing irritability and thirst, Zhi Bao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) is used to resolve it. Qiang Huo San (Notopterygium Powder), Fang Feng Dao Chi San (Saposhnikovia Guiding Red Powder), Chan Tui Gou Teng Yin (Cicada Slough Uncaria Decoction), and Tian Ma Wan (Gastrodia Pill) are also applicable. For constipation, Qi Bao Xi Xin San (Seven-Treasure Heart-Washing Powder) added with Chen Sha (Cinnabar) is used. For difficulty in urination and defecation, Shen Xiong Wan (Divine Xiong Pill) and Kuan Re San (Heat-Relieving Powder) are highly effective. For mild cases, Hua Feng Dan (Wind-Transforming Pill) can be taken, and An Shen Wan (Spirit-Calming Pill) is also effective.
